Hotel Flatey is the only hotel on the small island of Flatey in Breidafjordur Bay. The hotel is open between the months of June and August and can be reached via ferry. It is situated in the centre of the old village and is only a 5/10 minute walk away from the dock. No cars are allowed which only adds to the charm of the island and allows the old way of life to be preserved.
The hotel, along with the other buildings in the old centre are timber structures and have been restored in their original style. The rooms; 6 double/twin, 1 family room , 3 suites and 1 single room are welcoming, cosy, have a traditional yet fresh style and vary in size. The rooms have shared bathroom facilities. The guest rooms and dining room are located in converted warehouses flanking the old market square (just across from the main building). The hotel has a very inviting feel and a wonderful atmosphere. The restaurants serves fantastic local dishes and specialises in fish (not surprisingly) but meat and vegetarian dishes are also served.
You can easily walk around the circumference of the island taking in the tranquil ambience, observing the abundant birdlife (nesting ground for Arctic terns) and keeping an eye out for orcas and other marine life. The church on the island is a traditional wooden white church with beautiful paintings adorning the walls and roof. There is a library behind the church, which is the oldest in Iceland.
