Perched on a cliff-top overlooking the Atlantic Ocean by a secluded cove, the quirky boutique hotel, Ngala Lodge, oozes character and charm.

A range of suites is available, most with stunning views through the palm trees and across the lawns to the ocean beyond. Each suite is unique, but they are all spacious and bright, featuring colourful African textiles and furnished with art and sculptures from the owner’s eclectic collection. We particular love the larger Atlantic Suites (pictures 7 & 8), each with a private Jacuzzi, as well as the modern Macondo Suites (picture 4), three of which have a private plunge pool (picture 5).

New for 2020, the stunning Femmy Suite, with its own private decking area and 7.5m pool, is a fabulous addition to the range of accommodation available.

The restaurant at Ngala Lodge is reputed to be one of the best in The Gambia and enjoys an elevated position with those same glorious views. The menu features a range of beautifully presented, international dishes with daily specials including traditional West African fare. Many guests opt to stay half-board due to the quality and variety of dishes on offer.

Other features at the hotel include two swimming pools, a cocktail bar and plenty of quiet garden nooks to relax in amongst the flowers. You’ll also find some unusual features, not least the life-size cows on the lawn.

The quiet beach is reached via a series of steep steps and boosts a scenic decking area with sun loungers and parasols – the perfect spot for a sundowner with a view of the sunset. At low tide, take a romantic walk along the sand.
