Serdar means ‘leader’ in Turkmen and this was the first hotel in the Turkmenbashi area – a four-star hotel that opened its doors in 2001. Serdar Hotel is situated just outside Turkmenbashi in the town of Awaza, overlooking the Caspian Sea, and today the region is known as the Caspian Riviera.

The 11-storey white marble building accommodates 226 guests and the rooms here each have air-conditioning, satellite TV, internet access and en-suite bathrooms. But it’s outside where you’ll find the hotel’s real draw. Two seawater pools lie parallel to the private sandy beach, both lined with sun loungers and gazebos. The hotel grounds are decorated with sculptures and fountains, while trees create an oasis feel on the water’s edge. There’s also an indoor pool, as well as a spa, sauna and Turkish bath. Masseurs are on hand should you fancy a well-earned massage.

After time-out on the beach, head to one of the hotel’s restaurants or cafés. Fresh fruit and vegetables are brought in from across the country, including the country’s famous Turkmen melons. Alternatively, take a seat at the beach bar and, with a cold drink in hand, watch night fall over the Caspian Sea.
