The Anantara is perched on a hill overlooking the Mekong and Ruak rivers, just 45 minutes from Chiang Rai airport. Set amidst 160 acres of lush tropical jungle the hotel overlooks the Mekong River and the border with Burma and Laos.

The heart of this hotel is its vast split level lobby with a towering ceiling and views across the surrounding countryside. As well as housing the reception, this huge space leads on to the Elephant Bar, a charming boutique, and the lower level of the lobby is home to the Sala Mae Nam main restaurant. There are several ornate wooden daybeds in the lobby, covered in Thai silk cushions and floating voile canopies on which to unwind after a day of touring or work in the elephant camp. They give the space a very luxurious feel.

Through from the Elephant Bar, large doors lead out on to the Opium Terrace a stunning infinity edged swimming pool. This is without doubt the best place to spend the afternoon. The views are stunning and the shallow shelf at the edge of the pool allows guests to wallow in the cool waters and just drink it all in. The pool also has a jacuzzi and a water massage sala within the pool.

The Facilities
Anantara's main restaurant Sala Mae Nam blends the cuisine of three countries (Thailand, Myanmar and Laos) in one delicious menu. Guests can enjoy a whole steamed sea bass with ginger, lemongrass and chilli, a beautiful fragrant prawn salad and a classic thai green curry. Breakfast can be made extremely special by a visit from one of the hotels baby elephants. Sharing breakfast with the animal and watching the staff take real pleasure in feeding him mini bananas will be a joyful moment to remember.

If you are feeling a little curried out the hotel also have an Italian restaurant Baan Dahlia that serves authentic cuisine, complimented by an extensive wine menu from around the globe. We have tried this restaurant and were surprised by the chef preparing the signature dish in front of us.

A few cocktails at the Elephant Bar or on the Opium Terrace are the perfect way to start each evening. Sit inside in front of the fire or outdoors on the terrace around a central fire pit. The bar staff are very well trained and the cocktails match up to anything you can find in London. A waiter service is also offered around the pool.

For something extra special Anantara offer a Dine by Design service whereby the staff will arrange a private dinner at a location of your choice - in the rustic rice paddies, on the lower terrace overlooking the mighty Mekong or with the baby elephants in the bamboo forest.

Anantara has its own Elephant Camp, designed along the lines of the traditional mahout villages found in the hills of Northern Thailand in the days when logging employed the majority of Thailand's elephants. Guests have the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with these gentle giants. Some of the activities on offer include:

Mahout Experience
Guests have the chance to discover the strong bond between mahout and elephant as they learn to interact with these magnificent animals. They learn the basics of how to drive one of these intelligent creatures, trek along beautiful nature trails and experience a taste of authentic mahout life.

E.L.E. - Elephant Learning Experience
During this experience, guests can observe the behaviour and playful interaction of the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation’s rescued young elephants.

Walking With Giants
Guests will embark on an exploration of the jungle wilderness with the elephants and their mahouts on their daily walk. They will see these gentle giants splash in the river or play in the mud, snack on leaves from nearby branches and socialise with the herd.

As well as the elephant camp Anantara also have a Thai cooking school, they can arrange guided visits to local hill tribe villages, excursions to Burma's colourful border markets and the long tail boat rides up the Mekong River to Laos.

Create unforgettable memories with the resort's all-inclusive packages.
