This three-star hideaway in Khorog is bursting with charisma. It’s an idyllic place to return to after days spent hiking in the Pamir Mountains or hopping between museums and picking up bargains at Khorog Bazaar. Khorog is a scenic town with some stunning green spaces, such as the forested haven of Central Park, within walking distance from Lal Hotel. In summer, the park opens up its free swimming pool, fed by the cool water of the river, and also hosts the Roof of the World festival, celebrating the music, dance and crafts of the Tajik Pamirs.

Embracing its Pamiri heritage, this hotel is named after the precious stone lal, mined from the foothills of nearby mountain Kukhilal. Authentic Pamiri styles can be found all over the hotel, in its stone feature walls, wooden carvings, wicker furniture, colourful tapestries and patterned rugs. It creates a relaxed and homely vibe – and the garden is just as alluring, with cosy corners and tucked-away benches for a quiet read or snooze.

Rooms are simple, but comfortable. Some have a private bathroom and air conditioning, and they all have mountain views and Wi-Fi. A continental breakfast at the restaurant is included, and there’s also a café and bar at the hotel.
