Not a thing is out of place here at the Villa Bentota. The service, food, drinks and rooms are all outstanding. But I'm the kind of traveler that likes a little charm. Me? I love the train. Sitting on my veranda watching the commuters go by was just another peek into the local lives of the Sri Lankan people. AP

The hotel is located two hours from Colombo airport and is ideal for anyone travelling up and down the coast or for a prelonged beach stay. The hotel has been decorated throughout using a palette of black and white, mud, ivory and silver which gives a contemporary feel and beautifully compliments the tiled floors, antiques and subtle lighting whilst still retaining orginal Sri Lankan charm. Villa Bentota offers a pleasing alternative to the handful of larger hotels in the area.

There are 15 individually designed rooms and suites each with their own unique character. Some are seafacing, while others overlook the gardens and courtyards. The hotel also has a sprawling coconut grove opening out to the sea, two swimming pools, a restaurant (The Villa Caf?), a Paradise Road gift store and art gallery, as well as The Villa Spa offering treatments to both its in house residents and visitors to the hotel. The spa is managed by Spa Ceylon Ayurveda and the treatments range from body rituals to bath menus.

There are endless activites to enjoy in the local area such as Deep Sea Fishing, a trip to Beruwela Fish Harbour, Bicycle Tours, Watersports, a trip to the local Turtle Hatchery (you will be able to release the baby turtles into the ocean provided they are ready. Due to numbers this is usually possible). This tour is followed by dinner.

For fans of Geoffrey Bawa a visit to 'Lunuganga' his lakeside home is very interesting. Geoffrey Bawa's brother Bevis created a botanical garden called 'Brief'. A visit to this garden adds to the overall Bawa experience. (Please check visitor opening times for both of these activities before you leave).

Please note that rather unusually the coastal railway runs thorugh the garden of Villa Mohotti. Under normal circumstances this would not be ideal, but the old Sri Lankan train is so charming and ambles through so slowly that it is a real treat. After a night or two most people say they barely notice the train and come to love it. We certainly do and think it is a fantastic quirk thats adds to the magic of Villa Bentota.
