'Rosyth - great place, lovely accommodation and fantastic scenery. The staff were fantastic.' R.M -
If you've ever wondered what it would be like to experience life as a planter, Rosyth's Estate House will give you a pretty good idea. Dating back to 1926, this smart colonial cottage perched on the side of a verdant valley is set within 62 acres of a lush rubber and tea estate. Recently refurbished in 2013, the bungalow has retained its original design and boasts high ceilings, cool polished cement floors, spacious verandas and elegantly furnished rooms with eclectic works of art.
Whether you want to relax by the swimming pool, tucked into a lower pocket of the garden, enjoy a lazy afternoon tea or take a wander through the plantation, Rosyth feels like a home-from-home and makes for a unique spot to unwind.
The handsome home has eleven individually designed bedrooms, categorised as Classic Rooms, Deluxe Rooms and Suites. All rooms have air-conditioning and comfortable kingsize or twin beds.
The Classic Rooms, named Cardamom, Clove, and Mango, are situated in the main house and offer both double and twin accommodation. These en-suite bedrooms open on to the front verandah and have views of the Kandyan hills.
Meanwhile, the Deluxe Rooms each have a unique character of their own. Cinnamon is accessed from the rear garden and overlooks the estate and jungle-covered mountains beyond. Lime and Coconut offer more privacy and are located below the pool deck in a split level building. These two rooms can be interconnected via an internal staircase and are hence ideal for families. The Deluxe Rooms have ensuite bathrooms with twin wash basins and hot water showers.
The suites are simply fantastic and are situated in separate buildings. Tea and pepper suites offer a large space, lovey en-suite with open large bath and a wonderful verandah or patio area with incredible views. You could sit here for hours.
The new Rock Villa, comprised of the Rock and Banyan Suite, is incredible and we highly recommend staying here if possible! You can reserve the suite or the 2 bedroom villa as a whole, which is perfect for 2 couples or families. The suites, living area, plunge pool and views over the rock and jungle below are simply stunning!
The house has a large living and dining room, a cosy library with satellite TV and a wide selection of books, DVDs and games. Its outside living space is very generous, with large verandas, both to the front of the house and to the back, as well as a swimming pool with a sun deck and hammock.
Breakfast is served on the rear veranda and guests can chose where they wish to dine for lunch and dinner. Traditional Sri Lankan and western meals are prepared with fresh vegetables and herbs picked from their own gardens. For those who are interested in Sri Lankan cuisine, the in-house chef offers cookery classes.
The Estate House has a staff of twenty eight headed by a butler, as well as an estate manager who has overall day to day responsibility for the working of the estate, which grows coconuts, spice and tea. Many of the staff have worked for the estate for over 30 years.
Guests are free to explore the estate, join the ladies plucking tea leaves or see how the rubber is tapped. You can also take a walk down to the river and discover the small waterfall or to the local paddy fields and enjoy meeting with the local villagers. The Estate contains walking trails, there are mountain biking routes and staff will be happy to guide you through the tea terraces, rubber plantation and paddy fields. Children are welcome but youngsters should be supervised at all times.
Rosyth is located just twenty minutes from a fantastic elephant rescue project (not Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage!) and the ancient capital of Kandy less than an hour. From downtown Colombo or from the airport the Estate can be reached within 2.5 and 2 hours respectively.
