Rock Villa is a enchanting, 170 year-old beachfront Walauwa (Heritage House) set in 2.5 acres of tropical garden with towering coconut palms and fragrant frangipani. 2.5 hours south of the airport this beautiful stretch of coastline is tranquil enough to attract nesting turtles and the surrounding area is a haven for birdlife.

This secluded getaway is can be book ed on a room by room basis or is perfect for sharing as a whole with friends or family. For the well-travelled, discerning guest, Rock Villa is a convincing blend of modern creature comforts, colonial craftsmanship and cosmopolitan style without being one of the large chain hotels. Taru (the owner) says: “my staff and I don’t claim to offer flawless service, but we do promise you genuine smiles and the authentic, warm hospitality that Sri Lankans are famed for."

The hotel has 6 en-suite rooms, including a sumptuous 2-bedroom private villa. All rooms have air conditioning, showers and traditional Sri Lankan furniture. The two Deluxe Rooms sleep a maximum of 2 people. The Superior Rooms can accommodate 3 guests and the Walauwe Private Villa can sleep up to 6 guests in two bedrooms. The Walauwe also come with a private living room and spacious private veranda.

Similar to the neighbouring villas and low-rise hotels on this stretch of coastline, Rock Villa is set back behind the 60 metre wide Green Belt of mangroves and natural coconut lands. Therefore it is very quiet with absolutely no road noise. Beyond the end of the garden, across the single gauge railway track (which does create some noise a few times a day) and through the mangrove forest you emerge onto one of Sri Lankas most stunning beaches.

The hotel has an attractive al fresco dinning area and an enticing lap pool. The menu is varied and exciting, offering everything from a la carte breakfast menu, children's menu, casual small plates and then a formal set menu for evening dinning. We were served Cadbury's hot chocolate and homemade ginger cookies during our which were delicious.

There are also several nice places to eat out locally and plenty to see and do. Bentota is a great area for those who like to be quite active with watersports, surfing, snorkeling, bike rides, fishing and kayaking on offer not far from the hotel. For those who enjoy a more gentle pace of life you can do a river safari, visit Beruwela fish market and temple, release newborn turtles at the conservation center in Kosgoda, take a drive in a open top Morris Minor to Lunuganga House and Gardens or catch a train along the coastal railway to Galle where you will find the UNESCO Dutch Fort. Please ask about booking these activities in advance of your stay.
