Hiking

The countryside in Andalucia is stunning and varied and at times, rugged and wild. We’ve identified locations that offer fabulous walking with access to lovely traditional rural villages, incredible food and plentiful historical sites. Walking in Andalucia is a great way to understand the fascinating history of this land with remnants of its Moorish and Roman influences scattered throughout.

We can recommend shorter and day hikes, or if you would really like to cover some distance and shape your holiday around walking, we can move your luggage for you while you move from village to village. Walking routes are generally well established in Andalucia and in the areas where trails aren’t marked, our partners have created detailed trail guides to keep you on track!

We also have knowledgeable guides to take you on specialist walking tours of the cities so whether it’s history, culinary delights or music; you won’t miss a beat!

Whether you want a single-centre or multi-centre trip, we can tailor make your dream holiday, but for some inspiration, we have laid out some information about where you can stay and what you can see and our favourite hikes. We also have an example of a single-centre trip.

Inspiration

The hiking in Grazalema is rich with varied scenery, trails for all levels and idyllic Spanish white towns dotted throughout. Your walking holiday should play out exactly how you want. Check out this itinerary for some inspiration.

There are over 30 signposted routes and they showcase a great variety of flora and fauna. During the months of June-October, some of the trails have restricted access due to fire prevention measures and nesting wildlife. We can provide you with more information on this before you set off on your trip.

Sendero El Pinsapar

We love this 10km hike which starts with a challenging ascent with the rewards being magnificent views of the Serrania de Ronda and dense Spanish fir forest. This is a linear walk which requires a permit.

Zahara de la Sierra circuit

This is a fantastic route which starts and ends in Zahara de la Sierra and takes you up to the Brena pass. On the descent, amazing views open up of the Garganta Verde and Seca; two impressive gorges. You’ll be treated by plenty of Griffon Vulture sightings as this is home to one of the largest colonies in Europe. This is a 14.5km hike and we grade it at medium/difficult.

Grazalema Southern circuit

This route starts in Grazalema village and takes you up to the summit of two of the highest peaks in the Park and on a clear day, offers you views as far as Morocco! We love the variety that this hike offers; the scenery changes dramatically throughout and there are ascents, descents, scrambles and ambles! This is a 12.5km hike and we grade it medium/difficult.

Puerto de las Palomas

This is a favourite route as with minimum input, you get maximum reward of panoramic vistas at the top of Coros peak. This is an easy 3.5km hike which starts at the car park of the pass between Grazalema village and Zahara de la Sierra.

Garganta Verde

This hike offers unrivalled viewing of the impressive griffon vultures which nest and hunt in this gorge. The hike starts high and a good 2.5km descent into the cool depths of the gorge before you arrive at the spectacular halfway point of ‘The Chapel’; an ethereal stone cavern. Have a break and then head back on the ascent. This is a 5.5km medium level hike.

The Costa de la Luz is a beautiful stretch of coastline which, compared to other parts of Spain, is less developed and feels wild. The landscape varies and includes Mediterranean pine forest, wetlands, sand dunes, farmlands and even some Roman ruins! This area sits in the African-Eurasian flyway for migrating birds so it is a wonderful aera to spot birdlife. There are many fantastic routes to take all this in and also enjoy the beaches and southern Andalusian village life.

La Brena and Marismas del Barbate

This small Natural Park is packed full of variety; sand dunes, marshland, marine, cliff and pine-grove make up the 5 different ecosystems and as a result, it’s a real treat for the senses. We recommend a 21km moderate hike which starts out in Barbate and takes you along the cliffs on the coast and then into the pines.

The Sierra Subbetica remains well off the beaten track and offers some spectacular hiking and scenery. Hiking routes will take you in and out of rural white towns and there are many chances to witness ruins which tell the stories of Andalusia’s captivating history.

Bailon River Canyon

This is a really enjoyable hike which zigzags up form the village of Zuheros, into the river canyon and loops back around for some elevation and spectacular views. Passing ancient caves, some with neolithic paintings makes this an extra excited walk! This is a medium level, circular 12km hike.

Via Verde

The reinvented railway track covers 54km in total so you can take your pick of where to start and finish. The entirety is flat, making it a great fit for all and you’re treated with wonderful views of the neighbouring Sierra Subbetica mountain range. The path links a few lovely villages including Cabra, Luque and Zuheros.

Seville is a vibrant, architecturally beautiful city that is full of life and wildly romantic.
Malaga is a great place to start in Andalusia, with a well-connected airport, gorgeous beaches, rich in history and culture and just a stone throw from jaw-dropping hiking.
