Exploring South Africa Holiday

Whales & Wine Weekend

Your Itinerary

Day 1 - Hermanus

Arrival Friday morning and once you have your hire car, you will take the easy and gorgeous coastal drive flanked by mountains on one side and the ocean the other to Hermanus.  Great whale watching and photographic opportunities along the way – you even pass a resident penguin colony that you can go visit.  Arrival in the afternoon, you may even hear the bellow of the local ‘Whale Crier’ who calls to notify people of whale sightings.  Get settled into your guest house for a fun weekend of wine & whales…

Day 2 - Whale Spotting

While you can see some great whale sightings from the land, we do always recommend to take a whale boat trip to see them up close and personal.  Great views of the mountains and often you see dolphins and the odd penguin and seal too.  Afterwards stroll the bustling promenade with its pavement cafes, markets and oversized art pieces.

Day 3 - Franschhoekk

After a lazy breakfast and a last glimpse of the whales, take to the mountains through some lovely scenery to the little Huguenot village of Franschhoek.  The village is nestled in a mountain valley and offers an eye watering choice of restaurants and pavement cafes to indulge in good food and wine – many owned by some of South Africa’s top culinary masters.   Spend your last night in the village, strolling distance from the heart of the village – so you can drink and be merry on your last night in South Africa!

Day 4 - Winelands Exploring

After a scrumptious breakfast you will have the day ahead to explore the Winelands – have lunch on one of the many wine farms.  There is even time to pop across to Cape Town for a cable-way ride up to the top of Table Mountain.  Or you can just relax and unwind at one of the many pavement cafes in Franschhoek soaking in the vibey atmosphere and gorgeous surroundings.

The days is yours to explore till your evening flight home after a great weekend escape out of London!  Its only 12 hours away…

Whales and wine weekend… doesnt that sound like it could pass as a ‘www’ (lots-of-fun.com) weekend!?!?  And that you could do this as a cheeky long weekend away from London?  Fly out Thursday evening and be watching whales over the rim of your Sauvignon Blanc by Friday lunchtime?  Well you can!

During the months from about June to November the Southern Right Whales come into the Hermanus bay to calf and you can be spoilt with amazing land based whale watching experiences.  The whales can actually be found all along the coastline, but Hermanus offers some of the best and easiest viewing points – plus they even have a ‘Whale Festival’ the last week of September to celebrate these amazing gentle sea giants.

A visit to the Cape however is not complete without some wine sampling and we have coupled up your 3 night escape from London with a night in Franschhoek to end off a great weekend!
