A holiday in Slovenia has something for everyone! From lazying in the sun to adrenaline-pumping heights, indulgent food and wine experiences to detox retreats, family fun-filled vacations to romantic city breaks. And with more than half of its total area covered in forest, Slovenia really is one of the greenest countries in the world.
Every season has its attractions in Slovenia. The incredible mixture of climates here brings warm Mediterranean breezes up to the foothills of the Alps, where it can nonetheless snow even in summer.
Spring is a great time to be in the lowlands and flower-carpeted valleys; snow can linger in the mountains until late June.
Summer is the ideal time for hiking and camping. It’s also the peak season for visitors when accommodation in Ljubljana and on the coast can be rather tight, so be sure to book ahead.
Autumn is beautiful and rivals that of New England for it’s colours, particularly in the mountains of Gorenjska and Štajerska. It’s also a great time for hiking and camping, especially because it’s cooler.
In winter, Ljubljana under a light dusting of snow looks like something out of a fairy tale and over Christmas and into January the illuminations on Castle Hill and the winter markets are magical. Otherwise, winter in Slovenia is for skiers.
