Embrace Hanoi's rich history and culture by staying at its oldest and arguably most luxurious hotel. At times it feels as if every nook and cranny at the Sofitel Metropole, built in 1901, is laced in history and full of stories.
The beautiful French colonial decor that sweeps through the building makes for an enchanting and relaxing retreat from the busy streets of Hanoi. The lobby, restaurants and bars are beautifully designed and and when combined with the lovely outdoor swimming pool, fitness centre and spa, you may find it hard to leave the hotel at all.
The large hotel is split into two wings with separate lobbies but shared facilities. The opera wing, which was only renovated in 2009, has a more modern twist on the classic style - think red mosaic tiled bathrooms and black and white trimmings. The historic wing boasts a more traditional decor, like that of 1920s France and is rich in woods and darker colours.
The premium and grand premium rooms can be found in the Opera Wing, whereas the Luxury and Grand Luxury are in the Historical Wing. All have en-suites, a flat screen TV with DVD and wi-fi.The Premium and Luxury rooms are spacious, well appointed and have either twin or queen-sized beds as well as large bathrooms - some also have a private terrace spilling into the garden. The Grand Premium and Grand Luxury are larger, with either king-sized or twin beds available and there are suites in both wings which are larger still and also include private butler service.
The Sofitel, which has a fabulous wine cellar, has three restaurants on site. Le Beaulieu; a contemporary French restaurant, Spices Garden; an authentic Vietnamese restaurant and the Angelina restaurant and lounge which offers Italian cuisine and has a live DJ on every night from 9pm.
The hotel also has three bars; the colourful and richly adorned Bamboo Bar, the Terrasse du Metropole, which is on the street-side where dozens of brides stop for pictures every day, and Le Club, an airy cocktail lounge.
The Sofitel is located in central Hanoi, in the French Quarter - it is close to Hanoi's Opera House, the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake - but in a quieter location than those hotels in the Old Quarter.
Our tips: Take an exclusive history tour of the hotel with a historian, which will take you right down into the Sofitel's bomb shelters, which is only available to hotel guests.
