Exploring Peru

Adventure

Whether you’re a die-hard adrenalin junkie or just a big fan of the great outdoors, Peru is the perfect destination to add a slice of adventure into your holiday and embrace the fresh mountain air. From gentle walks to challenging hikes and climbs, and everything from cycling to zip-lining in between, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to ticking the adventure box. Take a peak at some of our favourite activities below to inspire you!

Sand-boarding in Paracas
Huacachina, the only desert oasis in South America, is also the hotspot for buggy and sandboarding in Peru! Huacachina is home to the largest sand dunes in South America, perfect for sandboarding!
Take a small plane over the Nazca Lines
Take a thrilling flight over these ancient geoglyphs etched into the Nazca desert in the south of Peru. Spread over almost 80km of desert a flight over the Nazca Lines is the only way to do justice to these incredible landmarks.
Hike down one of the world's largest canyons
The Colca Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world and home to some of Peru’s most impressive landscapes and high altitude scenery. The adventurous can take a two-day or three-day hike down (and up) out of this incredible canyon. If that sounds a bit much there's plenty of other very pretty and scenic walks to be done in the area.
Hike to the stunning Rainbow Mountain
Probably the most Instagram-enviable hike of Peru! At 5,200m this is a very high-altitude (and colourful!) experience . Rainbow Mountain is about three hours from Cusco in the Sacred Valley - the good news is you can walk as little as about 30 minutes to be able to see it and get the perfect photo (or take a horse) - whilst the more adventurous can take a longer hike here.
Saddle up for a four-legged adventure!
Peru has a plethora of opportunities for scenic horse-riding - we especially love horse riding at Lake Titicaca and the Colca Canyon but it can also be organised in the Sacred Valley too. A great option for the adventurous and young families alike.
Climb Via Ferrata and Zip-Line down to the ground
The Sacred Valley has some excellent climbing options. Via ferrata is Italian for ‘iron path’ and you make the ascent beside a steel cable, which you are attached to, limiting any fall. There are lots of iron rungs along the way to help you, and when you reach the top... well you get to zip-line down!
Take on the white water rapids of Peru
Rafting in Peru is a must for the adrenalin junkies! Said to be one of the best places in the world for white water rafting, covering so much of the Central Andes, it is home to lots of rocky rivers flowing down from the high mountainous peaks. We love the rafting in Urubamba in the Sacred Valley as well as the Apurimac River and Cotahuasi River near the Colca Canyon.
Kayaking on Lake Titicaca is a real highlight
One of our favourite ways to reach the magical Uros islands (where people live in straw houses on floating islands made entirely of straw) on Lake Titicaca is by kayak! It's a beautiful journey (albeit one at an altitude of about 4,000m). The very brave can also do stand-up paddle boarding here - but as it is the highest largest lake in the world the water is a little chilly for the unbalanced!
Cycling through the Sacred Valley
Cycling is a lovely past-time in Peru and there are lots of routes and options available throughout the country but especially in the Sacred Valley and Colca Canyon. We also love the e-bikes in the Sacred Valley which give you a little more power to explore the mountains.
Canopy-walking in the Amazon
The perfect adventure for young children (or the less adrenalin-fuelled amongst us!) The Amazon has some beautiful canopy walks where you can have an almost bird's eye view of the jungle below and perhaps spot a red howler monkey or two!
