I started travelling from a young age when I visited family in Canada and Australia and a lifelong passion for travel began. On my 18th birthday I flew to New York and took a bus to Massachusetts to work on a summer camp teaching outdoor pursuits. I enjoyed it so much that I went back every summer for three years to work and travel around the US.
After studying Business and Leisure Management at university, I worked as a tour leader where I led trips to Egypt, Greece, Uganda, Turkey, Oman, Pakistan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. One of my favourite trips was Central Asia Overland, where we followed The Silk Road from Tashkent in Uzbekistan all the way to Islamabad in Pakistan. I fell in love with the medieval city of Bukhara and was blown away by the impressive Kalyan Minaret that stands 47 metres high, featuring 14 ornamental bands.
I have continued working in the travel industry for 20 years in various roles and founded Silk Road and Beyond in 2002, which I sold to a specialist adventure tour operator in 2010, and worked with them for many year’s before joining Flee Winter.
I have had the good fortune to have travelled to over 65 countries and I am still keen to continue my global explorations (especially Central Asia) when opportunities arise. I live in the UK and enjoy talking about and planning tours for our clients to Central Asia and The Silk Road.
Central Asia & The Silk Road
“Central Asia is one of the last frontiers to be explored. The remoteness of this landlocked region and the beauty of the Steppe landscape make it a unique place to visit. Out of all the Five Stans to visit, a good place to start is with a tour to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to see the historical sites and stunning mountain scenery.” – Nigel, Central Asia Specialist
