Matuka Lodge is on the doorstep of Mount Cook National Park and just a short drive from a number of startlingly blue, glacier fed lakes. It is roughly half way between Queenstown and Christchurch so makes a great place to stop for a few nights and explore. There are plenty of activities on offer here from flights over the mountains, hot pools, stargazing, fishing and cycling along the Alps to Ocean cycle trail.

Matuka Lodge offers a delightfully comfortable base to relax at after a day’s activities or perhaps a few hours of driving. Peter and Jo, your hosts, will greet you like old friends and provide fresh baking or aperitifs on arrival.

The four guest rooms are elegant, comfortable and private. All have glass sliding doors that open out onto the terrace area and stunning views out over the trout pond with the Southern Alps in the distance. The two super king rooms have baths from which you can luxuriate and enjoy the same view.

The small town of Twizel is only a few kilometres away and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants that your hosts can recommend for you.

The whole area is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve. This means there is very limited light pollution at night, so just look up at the sky and prepare to be amazed.
