This is the ultimate relaxation spot if you wish to experience rural Myanmar from the comforts of a private riverside veranda. Mr Charles River View Lodge, which only opened in 2015, is a welcome addition to the Hsipaw guesthouse scene.

Ten spacious bungalows are perched along the riverside, all with river-facing verandas that are accessed from large, sliding glass doors in the bedroom. The bungalows, which are identical, have double or twin beds and are extremely spacious, light and airy with some lovely traditional Burmese finishing touches. The wardrobe and luggage area is separated from the bedroom with decorative floor-to-ceiling bamboo poles, with the bathroom beyond the luggage area. The bathroom features a large rain shower with great river views as well as a bamboo ladder, which serves as a towel rack.

There is a restaurant and bar area that serves very reasonably priced western, Shan and Chinese food. In busy periods a breakfast buffet will be served but at other times you are invited to order what you would like. Even then, you will be served fruit, coffee or tea and often some little local specialities to try.

This resort is location, location, location! It is just five minutes (by car) from the town of Hsipaw - down a rural dusty road, passing two traditional Shan villages on the way. It offers a unique opportunity to live in rural Myanmar for a night or two, where you may wake to see local children paddling long boats down the river, and water buffalo grazing in the fields opposite. We offer a wonderful boat ride (half day excursion) to a local monastery and village, and the boat can pick you up from the dock at the lodge.

In addition to its tremendous location, you will be superbly looked after by Htwe and her dedicated team, who do their upmost to make sure everybody is happy and looked after. Htwe also runs a guesthouse in town (Mr Charles guesthouse), which although is more of a backpacker’s destination, offers spotless and simple rooms in the town.
