It is impossible to think about Morocco without conjuring up images of the Sahara Desert being traversed by a stately camel train. The country’s south-eastern border marks the start of the thousands of miles of barren mountains and dunes and the area is well worth a visit.
But what is most surprising about the Moroccan desert is the beauty and the silence. It is easy to dismiss a visit to a large sandpit, but arriving on camel to a nomad camp in a dip in the dunes is definitely a life experience that everyone should try. The best desert access in Morocco is from two places: either the Erg Chebbi dunes around the village of Merzouga, or (our favourite) the Frontier town of M’hamid with the Cheggaga dunes beyond it.
You can can book a Morocco desert tour on its own or combine as part of a Morocco touring holiday staying in a rustic nomad camp or luxury desert tents
