Exploring Maldives

Family Tour of Sri Lanka & Maldives

When travelling with young children, we know that keeping the amount of travelling to a minimum is essential.

Our Family Tour of Sri Lanka & Maldives is carefully designed to ensure the whole family is able to get a good taste of the beauty and culture of Sri Lanka without ever having to spend longer than 2.5 hours in the car, and is then followed by 5 nights in a great family friendly resort in the Maldives where you can recharge before you head home.

As with all our itineraries, we can tailor the details to suit you. For example, extending or shortening the length of the trip, upgrading rooms and adding in stops.

If you prefer not to visit two countries, you might like to consider our Toddler’s Tour of Sri Lanka.

Your Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Sri Lanka

Land at Colombo International Airport where you will be greeted by your driver and transferred to The Wallawwa, just 25 minutes away. This garden hotel is an oasis in which you can rest and relax after your flight. The two bedroom interconnecting family rooms are ideal with young children.

Day 2 - Rosyth's Estate and Tea Factory

After a leisurely morning your driver will transfer you to Rosyth’ Estate House which is 45 minutes outside Kandy. Set on a working tea and rubber plantation the original planters bungalow has now been extended and modernised, but retains it history and old world charm. You really get to experience the hill country and a traditional plantation at Rosyth’s without travelling for hours up to Nuwara Eliya. On arrival at the hotel you can enjoy a pot of home grown tea before making your way to the factory for a late afternoon tour.

Day 3 - The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage

Today you can visit the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage which is just 20 minutes from Rosyth’s. Mainly ex- logging elephants whose mahouts could no longer afford to keep them, the animals have now formed a natural herd at the orphanage where they are protected. Visitors to the orphanage can feed some of the younger elephants, and you can often watch the whole herd bathe in the river near the camp. After lunch you will return to Rosyth’s where you can spend the afternoon by the swimming pool.

Day 4 - Kandy City Tour

On your last full day at Rosyth’s your driver will take you to Rambukkana train station where you will catch the scenic railway into the centre of Kandy. Your driver will follow the train and collect you when you disembark. Kandy is the religious heartland of Sri Lanka. During your city tour you can visit the Temple of the Tooth which is the most sacred temple on the island, as well as the immaculately kept Commonwealth Cemetery and the stunning Royal Botanical Gardens.

Day 5 - 8 - Explore the West Coast

It’s time to spend a few days exploring the beaches and the west coast. A nice way to do this journey is to drive into the centre of Colombo and then take the coastal railway down to Bentota. Your driver will purchase tickets for you on the day and follow the train with your luggage. Once in Bentota there is plenty to keep you and the children busy such as a excursion to Kosgoda turtle hatchery, boat trips, fishing, surfing, markets, day trips to Galle and Hikkaduwa, cookery lessons etc… We would suggest staying in a private villa such as Sri Villa where you can have meals prepared to suit the children and you have space to sit out at night while the children are asleep. Sri Villas can also arrange babysitters should you fancy a night out.

Day 9 - Head to the Maldives

Then time has come to leave Sri Lanka, and you will be collected for your transfer to Colombo airport for a 1.5 hour flight to the Maldives. On arrival in Malé you will be greeted by our local team and hop in a speedboat for a short ride to Anantara Dhigu, a family friendly resort in the South Malé Atoll. Arrive in plenty of time for dinner at any one of the seven restaurants on the island.

Day 10 - 13 - Enjoy the island life!

Take the next few days at your pace. Relax around your beach side villa, or explore the island – Anantara Dhigu has seven restaurants and two poolside bars to enjoy, and plenty of activities for the whole family. Snorkel or dive, take boat trips to spot dolphins, spend some time in the spa or get active with the wide variety of watersports. You can always drop the children off at the great Kids Club for a few hours and just relax in the warm lagoon.

Day 14 - Head home

Your speedboat transfer will be ready to take you back to Malé for your flight home. Until then, enjoy your last few hours in paradise.
