On arrival to Funchal airport you will be collected and brought to your hotel for the week Estaglem Ponta do Sol. Only 40 minutes away from the airport however, it will feel like you’ve entered another time. Take a stroll around the pretty town and settle yourself in for a relaxing week. Have a dip in the infinity pools as you gaze out on the spectacular sea views before enjoying dinner at the hotels restaurant.
Why not explore your first levada walk. Not far from the hotel is Lombada Da Ponta Do Sol. This 8km loop walk takes you along two levadas, past a waterfall all with breathtaking views. It’s best to do this morning as its quieter and a good excuse to indulge in long lazy lunch. In the afternoon you can lie by the pool, on the beach or maybe you’ll want to take a trip into Funchal.
It’s up early this morning as you collected from your hotel for an epic trip into the ancient laurisilva. Drive for an hour to the north of the island for one of the best Levada walks, the Caldeirao Verde. Leave civilisation behind and venture deep into a land that time forgot. Here dandelions are huge and lilies of the valley are more like bushes.
A bit more of a challenge at nearly 17km but the path is mainly flat and you’ll be too enthralled with the nature surrounding you to notice your tired legs. Your guide will tell you all about the native flora and fauna.
Time to get out to sea and up close with the many whales and dolphins that live year round in the surrounding waters. Some 20 different kinds of dolphins and whales have been recorded off Madeira, more than a fifth of all species in the wild
In the morning you will be brought picked up from your hotel and brought to Calheta for your two hour trip. Afterwards why not stay in Calheta for a while and relax on the beach for the afternoon.
The Bica da Cana Viewpoint is located in a more central area of the island and gives us a spectacular view over the Massif Mountain Range, where we find Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo and over the north of the island, especially the São Vicente valley. Here you will find a quiet area to relax while enjoying the sunrise, unlike the Miradouro do Juncal which is a very well-known place, sometimes we have some people there.
After the sunrise, you will continue to Rabaçal where we find the Levada do Alecrim, an easy level levada of approximately 7km (round trip). The landscapes over the valleys of Rabaçal and Ribeira da Janela are breathtaking, and it is here that we find the Laurissilva forest that was considered by UNESCO in 1999 as a World Heritage Site.
The route ends at the “Dona Beja” lagoon where you can rest and go for a swim in the clear waters of the lagoon. The return is done by the same route.
The Porto Moniz Natural Swimming pools are incredible lava-rock tidal pools on the north-western tip of Madeira. You can swim, explore, snorkel, and hang out on the rock formations and small lagoons at this family-friendly location.
Spend your last full day relaxing by the pool or on the beach.
