Famous all over the world for its natural beauty, the Island of Madeira is often called “the floating garden of the Atlantic”. Here exotic plants that grow out in the open here that would normally only be found in hot-houses in other parts of the world. Madeira’s sub-tropical like climate, warm and moist, together with the fact that the soil is a rich volcanic base, makes for perfect growing conditions for native as well as foreign additions alike. Plants from all corners of the earth can be found here, thus Madeira gardens can be found in bloom right throughout the year. In the capital Funchal, everywhere you go, whether its in the streets in town, the hotels, the houses, the larger estates or the parks, you will find a large selection of sub-tropical plants growing in beautifully designed gardens. The must-visits are the Madeira Botanical Gardens and Monte Palace Tropical Gardens.
Due to its location, Madeira is able to offer multiple opportunities to view whales and dolphins throughout the year. Some 20 different kinds of dolphins and whales have been recorded off Madeira, more than a fifth of all species in the wild.
Summer is the best season and if you’re in luck you might see pilot whales, sperm whales and Bryde’s whales, while bottlenose and spotted dolphins are common at any time of year.
In Funchal, more precisely in the parish of Monte, you will find a very special type of transport, the “wicker toboggans”, which is a unique experience not to be missed. The famous “carros de cestos” are one of the most popular attractions of the city. Driven by two men, called “Carreiros”, who use their boots as brakes, taking you along 2km of pure emotion and adrenaline
Madeira is a great destination to get on some trails and get in a good hike or trek through nature. The island is covered in mountain trails, but among the most memorable pathways are along the levadas, or man-made canal/irrigation systems
The highest cliff in Europe. Climb to the top of Cabo Girao and admire a breathtaking landscape from the highest cliff in Europe. A promontory recently installed makes the experience even more unique because its transparent glass structure will give you the impression of being suspended in a vacuum, at 590 meters high.
The Porto Moniz Natural Swimming pools are incredible lava-rock tidal pools on the north-western tip of Madeira. You can swim, explore, snorkel, and hang out on the rock formations and small lagoons at this family-friendly location. For just a 1.50 euros entry fee, this is the best value fun you’ll ever have on vacation.
