3 Star Hotel Sassi was born in 1996 and was one of the first hotels in Sassi when a series of stone cave dwellings, dating back to the 1500s, were carefully refurbished. It has a very special location, in the heart of atmospheric Sassi, a short walk from Piazza San Giovanni and Matera’s buzzing main square Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where an abundance of excellent restaurants, cafes and bars can be found. The property tumbles around the cobbled streets and maze of walkways on different levels, boasting an incredible view across the cave dwellings and town streets from the various terraces and patios.

The hotel has 35 rooms, each one different from one another due to the nature of the buildings, and are scattered around various levels. Some rooms are on street level and accessed directly from the path, whilst others are found off the main lobby and lower levels. The categories are split in to Standard Rooms, Junior Suites and Suites and whilst the rooms are simple, they offer en-suite shower rooms, heating/AC, wifi, telephones and TVs. All Suites have a view out on to the Sassi whilst some the Standard Rooms and Junior Suites have a view. We would highly recommend either a Junior Suite or Suite to enjoy a more spacious room and of course the breathtaking view!

The hotel serves up a great breakfast, using local seasonal produce, with various continental and local options to choose from. Weather permitting, it is best taken at one of the tables that spill out from the dining room out on to the terrace, so that you can enjoy your morning coffee with a view! The property also serves aperitifs with a small bar menu each evening.

NB - parking is not possible directly at the hotel as it is located inside the historical centre which has restricted car access. The hotel does work with a nearby garage where you can park for a daily fee.
