The Hornbill Camp is located on the banks of the Periyar River and consists of cottage tents situated on raised platforms which mix a rustic stay with a level of luxury. The tents are spacious and have en-suite toilets and are insect proof with their own sit out area to enjoy the beautiful setting you are in. Whilst well-structured tents, the camp is still relatively basic and for those looking for adventure not modern amenities!

Hornbill has been constructed with local materials using local labour and is managed by the local community who benefit directly from the camp. The food is home-cooked Keralan food made with spices from the land and is served by dedicated camp staff.

The camp overlooks the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary and so is perfect for nature lovers with over 270 species of bird living in just a small area of 25 sq kms. You can hope to see amongst others the Spot-bellied Eagle Owl, the rare Mottled Wood Owl, Malayan Night Heron, Rusty-tailed Flycatcher, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Si Lanka Frogmouth and the Grey-headed Bulbul.

The location makes Hornbill also ideal for cycling into the countryside, kayaking expeditions and walks into nearby villages and plantations.

We recommend this as a great place for someone looking to explore the outdoors from a basic but truly comfortable and welcoming lakeside camp location.
