Exploring Iceland

Whale Watching

Whale watching excursions are available all year round and at different locations in Iceland. Husavik, a charming fishing village not far from Akureyri in the north, is the whale-watching capital of Iceland and tours in the Skjalfandi bay, and Eyjafjordur Bay (Akureyri) are calm, more isolated and scenic. Winter whale-watching tours only operate out of Reykjavik.

Irrespective of the location, these excursions offer an incredible opportunity to observe a variety of whale species in their natural environment alongside harbour porpoises, white-beaked dolphins, basking sharks, seals and various sea birds including puffins.

The operator we work with is known to be the best in the industry and offers a diverse range of tours including the Original Whale Watching Tour, Silent Whale Watching (carbon-neutral), Whales and Puffins, Sails and Whales (on an authentic sailboat) which all operate out of Husavik between March & November and the Lights and Winter Nights Tour during the winter months, departing from Reykjavik.

My Advice: Opt for the Sails and Whales or Silent Whale Watching excursion during the summer (my favourite tours). Visiting in winter? No problem as The Lights and Winter Nights tour has the added bonus of snow-capped mountains, sunsets, beautiful stark scenery and the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights

Season: All year round
