Exploring Iceland

The Wild Beauty of The Westfjords

Your Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive & Relax

Your private guide will meet you at Keflavik airport, where you can go straight to The Blue Lagoon to bathe these milky healing waters. Alternatively, you could walk along the Reykjanesta coastline for that ‘Land’s End’ feeling, visit the town of Grindavik for some lunch and Gunnuhver hot spring. Spend the night in Reykjavik.

Day 2 - The West Coast

The West of Iceland has so much to offer in terms of geological features, myths and magic, beautiful hikes and not forgetting Snaefellsjokull glacier itself. Visit Svalthufa sea stacks, Djupalonssandur black pebble beach, watch seals basking in the sun and walk through the spectacular lava fields between the little villages of Arnastapi & Hellnar. There are so many options for beautiful hikes and chances to get off the beaten track, your guide will be delighted to show you the best spots, and of course a hike up onto Snaefellsjokull glacier should you wish to. You will have lunch at the picturesque town of Stykkisholmur by Breidafjordur Bay. Later, visit the shark museum and sample some fermented shark, washed down with a little Brehnniven!

Day 3 - Flatey Island

This morning you will catch the ferry from Stykkisholmur across the Breidafjordur Bay to the remote island of Flatey (winter population around 2 but over 100 in the summer). Breidafjordur Bay is made up of thousands of (now mostly) uninhabited islands. You will feel like you have stepped back in time when you set foot on the ‘Flat Island’. Cars are prohibited and all the buildings are in the classic Icelandic style. Most of the island is a nature reserve and birds thrive here. The panoramic views are stunning. Walk the circumference of the island before retiring to a lovely little hotel for the night

Day 4 - The Edge of Europe

Today you continue over the other side of Breidafjordur Bay, keeping an eye out for orcas. You will then start your tour of the Westfjords, taking in these majestic fjords and mountain passes. Raudisandur (red sand) Beach is first on the list and then it’s onto the Latrabjarg cliffs, the westernmost part of Europe. These cliffs are awe-inspiring. Birdlife is abundant here and the puffin is prevalent and quite tame.

Day 5 - Beautiful Backroads

Today you will drive to the Northern area of The Westfjords, stopping off at the impressive, Dynjandi waterfall. This spectacular backroad, Lokinhamraleid is only accessible by 4×4 and an experience driver is required! It’s well worth it for the views. Stop off at Svalvogur creek and enjoy a picnic overlooking a panoramic view unlike any other. Spend 2-3 nights in the beautiful village of Flateyri.

Day 6 - Flateyri

Take some time to relax in this beautiful village. Go for a walk along Onundarfjordur beach to a secret waterfall and hike up Mt Thorfinnur if you’re feeling adventurous where you will be rewarded with incredible views of the fjord and village. Enjoy the lovely house you will stay in which is situated right on the edge of the Fjord. There is a quite pub just down the street and a lovely old bookshop/café.

Day 7 - Kayaking in Isafjordur

Today a guide/instructor will take you sea kayaking or Stand up Paddleboarding along the fjords. Alternatively you could go mountain biking (both activities are suitable for all levels). There are also plenty of walks you could discover, with our without your guide. Later, have a look around Isafjordur, the principle village in the region. There is an interesting museum and there are some lovely bakeries/cafes.

Day 8 - Reykjavik

This morning you will fly back to Reykjavik from Isafjordur where you can spend some time shopping, visiting the museums and art galleries perhaps or simply relaxing at The Blue Lagoon if you didn’t get a chance to when you arrived. Catch your afternoon flight from Keflavik airport and bid Iceland farewell, for now!
