Greenland Sailing Expedition

Your Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Iceland

Welcome to Iceland! You will be met at the airport and whisked away for a few hours to soak in the restorative silky smooth waters of the world renowned Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Alternatively, you could explore the Reykjanes peninsula to experience that ‘Land’s End’ feeling, visit the village of Grindavik and the Gunnuhver hot springs. Soak up the culture and atmosphere in Reykjavik that afternoon and evening.

Accommodation

Day 2 - Set Sail in Greenland

Fly from Keflavik to Constable Point in Greenland. You will be transferred to your boat to embark on your Greenland Sailing Expedition. The crew will help you settle in and give you a briefing before you set sail for Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the most isolated settlements in the world. Here, you will disembark and experience the tranquility of this village whilst admiring the magnificent views of Kap Brewster and the Volquart Boons Coast to the south.

Day 3 - Iceberg Palaces & Inuit Settlement

Today you will sail west between palatial ice corridors. Later you will anchor at Hekla Havn, on Denmark Ø, the site of an Inuit settlement and the winter camp of the first scientific expedition to Scoresby Sund. End the day with a short evening walk to explore Hekla Havn and the surrounding area.

Day 4 - The Day of the Fjords: Majestic Mountains & Granite Cliffs

You will continue sailing west through the narrow Føhnfjord. Admire the majestic basalt rock columns of the Gaseland on one side and 2000m high sheer granite cliffs of Milne Land on the other. You will come to the bizarre looking Red Island and set foot on the red sandstone shore. You will then continue north through Rødefjord, passing large icebergs. The day will end in Harefjord, where you will drop anchor for the night.

Day 5 - Hiking & Scouting for Wildlife

Hike the hills and mountains in search of wildlife such as  muskoxen, snow hares, grouse, geese and other wildlife, which usually graze on the south-facing slopes of Harefjord. You will have lunch at the top of a ridge where you will have breathtaking views over the fjord. The terrain drops down to each side of the ridge and the glacier tongues descend into the sea. If you’re not feeling  up to an easy to moderate 6hr hike (in total) you can stroll along the coast or stay on board admiring the view from the deck.

Day 6 - Setting Sail in the Majestic Øfjord

Today you will sail east to the awe-inspiring Øfjord. This should be one of the most incredible sections of your journey. Tall mountains tower over the fjords, reminiscent of the  Cerro Torre in Southern Patagonia and the Fitzroy river in Queensland. At the end of the day you will anchor in Jyttes Havn.

Day 7 - Hiking & Swimming!

You spend the day hiking in the Jyttes Havn area in The Bear Islands, one of the most picturesque anchorages in Scoresby Sund. Choose between a shorter or longer hike around The Bear Islands or on the northernmost tip of Milne Land, a short boat ride away. Later you can go for a swim in the sea, unbelievably, as the sea temperature can reach 13°C in the summertime. If  time and conditions allow, you will spend the evening on the beach sharing stories around a bonfire.

Day 8 - Archipelagos & Icebergs

You will sail the channel between Milne Land and The Bear Islands today, affording a breathtaking view of the archipelago. As the day draws on you should encounter some of the most impressive and majestic icebergs of the voyage.

Day 9 - Life After Greenland

Enjoy your last breakfast together, write in the diary on board ship and bid your new friends and the crew farewell! Disembark the boat, transfer to  Constable Point and fly back to Reykjavík. Catch your flight home and contemplate this once-in-a-lifetime voyage!

You will sleep in a cosy bunk/cabin below deck and all meals will be cooked for you. All drinks will be provided and anything else you require (with reason).
