Exploring Iceland

Getting Around

Iceland is a stunning country with beautiful and varying landscapes and sights around every corner. Public transport doesn’t really exist outside large towns and cities so the only way to explore the country is by car. Irrespective of the season, the weather in Iceland is highly unpredictable and changes rapidly. The Icelanders having a saying, ‘if you don’t like the weather, wait 10 minutes and it will change’. This is why it is very important to respect the weather and terrain when travelling and why all our tours includes the services of a private Icelandic guide, experienced in tackling all terrains and weather conditions. They will not only transfer you between locations, in a modern, luxury (fit for purpose) 4×4 but be there to guide you as you hike along glaciers, show you all the best spots, explain the geology and history of the area and regale with you the wonderful Icelandic folkstories and sagas. However, you will still have as much independence as desired. Due to the unpredictable weather in Iceland, during all seasons, you will need to have a plan B & C to ensure you make the most of your time. Your private guide will have thought through these backup plans ensuring you don’t become stranded somewhere with nothing to do and perhaps nowhere to stay, which happens reasonably regularly to those travelling alone.

It is possible to hire a car and drive yourself across Iceland but we only advise doing this during the summer months. Private guiding is still the recommended option for many reasons but we can also plan a ‘self-drive’ holiday through Iceland if you are certain you would like to explore this option.

You can also catch domestic flights across Iceland. These flights depart from Reykjavik Domestic Airport, not Keflavik International. Where possible we have included these in our itineraries to save on driving time.
