Named after the Blue Lagoon's primary restorative element, Silica Hotel is a place of relaxation and rejuvenation where you can simply immerse yourself in these iconic milky waters and relax in the spa and if desired, tour the Reykjanes Peninsula by ATV, luxury jeep, helicopter or by foot.

Background
Silica Hotel was built to complement and accentuate the Illahraun lava plain, a vast plane of volcanic rock that erupted from the earth 800 years ago and now stands frozen in time until 1976 when gothermal ‘aquifers’ were discovered and a geothermal plant was constructed providing electricity and hot water for the Reykjanes Peninsula. A warm, blue body of water formed next to the plant and did not drain away due to the silica lining the natural reservoir. Residents began to bathe in these milky waters, word began to spread and now visitors come from far and wide to experience the healing properties of this natural phenomenon. In the 1990s research confirmed the healing properties of the silica, algae and other minerals in the water. In 1999 the Blue Lagoon Skincare line was formed and the spa and hotel opened.

Situation
The Blue Lagoon and hence, Silica Hotel & The Retreat, are located on the Reykjanes Peninsula near the village of Grindavik. In 2015 this peninsula was officially granted the status of UNESCO Global Geopark. Home to The Blue Lagoon, the Reykjanes Peninsula straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the boundary between the Eurasian and American tectonic plates. Hence, the peninsula's terrain is alive with volcanic features and geothermal phenomena. Silica Hotel is only 20 minutes drive from Keflavik airport and only 45 minutes from Reykjavik.
