The Story Behind Magma Hotel
In 1783 one of the most horrific volcanic eruptions in human history occurred. This devastating eruption shaped this region and created a lava field known as Eldhraun. This unique natural wonder became the (volcanic) rock upon which Magma hotel was built. This tranquil haven is a stark contrast to the tragic event which shaped the land it lies upon.

Magma hotel is a small, intimate hotel close to Kirkjubaejarklaustur and centrally located along the south coast which offers its fortunate guests a peaceful, welcoming place to relax amidst beautiful landscape and Icelandic nature.

Rooms The hotel's cabins are spacious and have a real sense of Nordic coziness but with fresh contemporary furnishings and pops of colour. The restaurant and breakfast room is a lovely space for an intimate dinner or a place to meet like-minded travellers. The rooms back onto the lake, rich with birdlife, moss covered lava fields, black sand glacial river and the imposing volcanoes and Vatnajokull in the distance. Great Northern Lights location – terraces attached to rooms on edge of lake. Choose from standard double or twin, deluxe double or a family room. All rooms have an en-suite bathroom, terrace and flat-screen tv.

Bistro 1783 Named after the year Lakagigar erupted the restaurant has great views and a friendly atmosphere. Complimentary tea and coffee is served throughout the day and books, magazines and boardgames are available to guest. It is a social yet romantic setting in the evening where you can enjoy a candlelit dinner. True Icelandic home-cooked meals are served, consisting of local ingredients and will vary depending on what is season. Healthy options are always on the menu and special dietary requirements can be catered for. The buffet breakfast consists of freshly baked bread and pastries, fruit, Icelandic Skyr, cereals, bacon and eggs.

Magma Hotel has a great location, central to many of the natural wonders that make up the south coast of Iceland. Nearby sites including, Vatnajokull, Europe's largest glacier, Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, Skaftafell National Park, which is made up of glacial rivers, ice caves and bergs, deep canyons and sweeping valleys. Eldhraun lava field, Lakagigar volcano and Fjadrargljufur canyon are all just a stone's throw away. Horse ride across this beautiful landscape, go snowmobiling on Vatnjaokull, take a super jeep tour, explore the ice caves or go for a boat ride amongst icebergs.
