Hotel Vestmannaeyjar is the perfect base from which to explore the principal island of Heimaey in The Westman Islands. The hotel is centrally located and has direct access to hiking and bird watching. The manager and staff at the hotel are excellent hosts.

Single, twin, double rooms and one suite are available. An extra bed can be added to cater for families. All rooms have an en-suite bathroom, tv, wi-fi and drinks making facilities. The hotel has a sauna, two jacuzzis and treatment rooms.

The Einsi Kaldi restaurant on the ground floor of Hotel Vestmannaeyjar is very popular boasting exquisite dishes suitable for all ages and tastes. The local Brothers Brewery beer is served at the bar which may be nice to try or perhaps visit the Brewery itself.

The ferry, Herjólfur, sails to Heimaey from the mainland five times a day during the winter and six during the summer making a visit to Heimaey a must if you have a day or two to spare.

Excursions & Places to Visit

  • Hike across the island and up Eldfell (short hike), The Mountain of Fire, which erupted in 1973 covering 20% of the island and increasing the area of Heimaey by 2km
  • Visit Eldheimar, 'The Pompeii of The North' museum. The exhibition focuses on the 1973 volcanic eruption
  • The Westman Islands are home to the largest puffin breeding ground in Europe and Heimaey is a prime spot for avid birdwatchers
  • Admire Heimaey, its caves and nesting grounds by speedboat or kayak. You may even spot some whales
  • You can hire some bicycles or e-trikes to explore the island.
  • Search for Beluga whales on a boat tour in Klettsvik Bay and visit the aquarium and puffin hospital
