Exploring Horse Riding Holidays

Slovenia Essentials

When to visit:

Spring,  March to May:

Slovenia awakens from its hibernation. The melting snow turns rivers and waterfalls into ‘ragging’ streams, making their way down through the valleys. Due to this, they start turning the valleys into full bloom. The weather is unpredictable but its a great time to be spontaneous. Get out there and feel the changing of the season.

Once in full swing, Slovenia basks in the excitement of warmer times ahead. Best time to travel would be the late spring, weather is getting drier and warmer. May the temperatures are normally around 17 degrees at daytime.

Summer, June to August:

Temperatures in Slovenia soar into the 30 degrees in July and August and most of the country bakes in golden splendour except for the alpine north west (Kranjska Gora, Bled, the area we ride in). Here temperatures are generally cooler by the odd 5 or 10 degrees (perfect for hiking and walking). The warmish weather can throw up days with short and sharp storm activity with spectacular displays of lightning for all. Despite the queues at major attractions, summer is a great time to visit. Many people like to sightsee in the cool air of the morning, enjoy a long lunch in the shade of a local gostilna or perhaps take a swim. In the evening, what better way to take in the local culture than a leisurely stroll with an ice cream before heading off for dinner and maybe a late evening drink at a local bar.

Autumn, September to November:

Autumn is also a great time to visit, as slowly the crowds disappear. From September, the temperature go down to a comfortable early to mid 20’s and the waters are still warm enough for a relaxing dip. Forests turn into these magical autumn colours. The weather is still good for riding, hiking and anything else you like to do.  With the cooler weather, expect a little more rain going into October and especially November, here the locals begin storing firewood for the oncoming winter.

Flights to Slovenia:

Easy Jet offers direct flights from London Stansted.

Getting around:

The return airport transfer and transfers specified in the trails, are included. For those who would like to extend their stay to do a bit more sightseeing, we are happy to offer a rental car.

Travel Essentials:

Before you go:

Visas & Passports – Passports must be valid for at least 6 months. Visas are not necessary for UK passport holders. Other nationalities should check with the local embassy.

Insurance – We strongly recommend that you take out a policy to cover theft, loss, and medical issues. Please visit our page on travel insurance for further information. It is a good idea to photocopy and scan all relevant documents – passport, travel insurance policy, etc. – and leave one copy at home. Carry another copy with you, separate from the originals and digital versions on your smartphone.

Electricity – 220v. You will need UK-European Plug adaptors.

Currency – Euros are easy to get in the UK and it’s worth shopping around to avoid airport rates. If you are very organised you can get a pre-paid currency card, which you can use in a similar way to a debit card. We recommend Revolut and Monzo. Some cash is recommended.

Clothing – The temperature varies enormously depending on the time of year. The evenings during spring and autumn tend to be a little cooler. The weather has the potential to be a little unpredictable even in mid-summer. Therefore it is worth taking an extra layer.

Driving Licence – All car rental companies accept UK photo drivers license. Although not all companies require a Driving License Code, we would recommend obtaining one before you collect your car. You can do this through the DVLA website (https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence) and you will need: your driving licence number, your National Insurance numbers, the postcode on your driving licence

While you are here:

Time difference – 1 hour ahead of UK time.

Telephone – Dial 0044 or +44 for a UK number.

The Slovenian international code is +386

Tipping – Normally you tip around 10% at restaurants. We recommend the following amounts for local guides based on your experience: €5-8 per person for a day tour.
