Black & White Magic, explore the karst region on majestic Lipizzan horses

This Black & White Magic holiday gives you the opportunity to explore the surroundings of Lipica on these gracious white horses. Born as black foals but, like magic, they turn white over the years. The Lipica stud farm and its hotel Maestoso, is situated in the hearth of the karst region. The stud farm is offers 300 hectars of green, hence a paradise for over 300 horses. A visit to the stud farm is a special experience. Get to know the history of it, from its foundation until today. Here you can find out all about the Lipizzan horses. Meet their black foals and watch them play on the green meadows. See the amazing, renewed show of the Lipica classical riding school. During this black & white magic holiday, you have the opportunity to connect with the horses and become a horse whisperer. Due to a new show, you can now interact and be witness of their power. However, at the same time they are so gracious and easy to teach.

The stud farm

Every morning hundreds of white Lipizzan horses gallop right past you. A must see, as it is an unforgettable experience! On site there is a lot to see and do. First of all there is a carriage and culinary museum. Take a carriage ride on the 300 hectares of green. Enjoy a guided walk among 300 Lipizzan horses. For those who love dressage, lessons are offered. But, also for the unsure ones, a lesson will be very helpful, before you ride out into the karst. Pony riding is offered for the younger ones.

The green Lipica estate now offers electric bicycles. For this reason, this trip is also nice for the accompanying non-rider, as you can meet up at most of the sights. Equestrian sport events can be experienced throughout the year. For instance,  the Picnic Festival with its relaxed atmosphere, is a great experience for young and old.

Day 1

Arrival at Ljubljana airport. Upon arrival a transfer is arranged, which will take you to Lipica. After you have settled in, you can enjoy a tour around the famous stud farm. Like this it is nice to get the orientation for the coming days.


Day 2

After breakfast you will meet up at the stables for a ride to Povir. Here you will visit the lavender fields. On your way you will stop for a delicious picnic lunch. After the horses and riders had a break, you will ride through the typical karst landscape with its rolling hills and underground caves. Back on the stud farm, you can visit the afternoon horse show.

Day 3

Time for another exciting ride on these magical horses. Experience their strength and kindness while riding up to hill Kokoska, it levels 670 m above the sea.The ride will follow the edge of the karst, overlooking the Gulf of Trieste. You will stop at a charming little hut where the horses can have a rest, while you walk the last meters by foot and be rewarded with a breath-taking view of the Adriatic Sea.

In the afternoon you have time for a carriage ride

Day 4

After breakfast you will meet at the stables again and your guides will take you on a ride through the Rosandra Valley. One of the landscapes most cherished by Trieste residents and for centuries this valley was the route to the sea from the Karst plateau. Back for lunch at Maestoso and the afternoon you have time to explore the property by foot or on e-bike.

Day 5

Time to learn more about the herbs that grow in this karst region. After breakfast you will ride to Kacice, a small village situated 16 km from Lipica. Here you will visit the so-called “Garden of the Karst”. Here they will tell you all about the typical flowers and herbs from this unique landscape. After a tasting of the products, you will ride back to the stables, passing through a small historic town.

Day 6

Today you will ride through a region that is well-known for its fertile vineyards and beautiful vaulted cellars. You will visit one of the region’s oldest winery. Enjoy a wine tasting and learn more about the rich history of this family run wine farm.

Day 7

After breakfast it is time to say goodbye. A transfer will take you back to the airport for your flight back home.

Who can come?

  • Available for confident intermediates and experienced riders
  • The horses on riding holidays work hard week after week and even with regular breaks and good tack it is hard work for them, therefore the maximum weight is 187lb (85kg). Though an experienced rider, who may exceed the weight limit, may ride very light on the horse’s back. So, please do check with us first.
