Okavango Delta

In the north of Botswana, the Okavango River, an inland delta, forms an impressive ecosystem. Here, the river meets a geological barrier where most of the water is absorbed by plants, seeps away and evaporates. At over 20,000 square kilometres, the Okavango Delta is one of the largest wetlands in Africa. Its special feature is that the peak water level in the delta is reached when there is drought in the surrounding regions. This creates the basis for a particularly diverse fauna. The Okavango Delta is part of the 444,000 square kilometre Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area, which was established in 2012 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. The Moremi Game Reserve extends over 5,000 square kilometres in the central and eastern part of the delta.

Moremi Game Reserve

Welcome to the oldest protected section of the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

A hundred years after the explorer David Livingstone described this land as “land full of rivers”, the environment and wildlife in the Moremi area were under serious threat. The courageous Batawana people are to thank for this area being declared a Moremi Game Reserve in 1963, making it the oldest and first protected reserve in the Okavango Delta. As much as 40% of the Okavango is part of the UNESCO-protected Okavango Delta Game Reserve. Moremi and the Okavango Delta are one of the few inland delta systems that do not flow directly into the ocean or sea. Yearly flooding makes for spectacular interaction between water and wildlife, as animals synchronise their cycle with this seasonal flood. Experience a truly unique area when you stay at one of the intimate lodges in Moremi and let the river take you on an adventure.
