MALAYSIA

September can be wet in most of South East Asia but the east coast of Malaysia is sunny and in 2025, it’s the month of Penang’s Hungry Ghost Festival. Chinese opera and music performances, the burning of huge joss sticks and lanterns, and a sweet woody scent come to Georgetown.

All to provide for ghosts and those in the afterlife. Keep an eye out for small fires in temples where paper goods and money are burned to help the deceased have enjoyable afterlives.

A few September days in Penang combine well with time in Kuala Lumpur and the east coast beaches. Tanjong Jara is one of our favorites although if you’re a diver, then head for the Perhentians or Tioman.

Malaysia should be on your list of where to go in September 2025.
