By Val Garibotti on 16th October, 2024

October – a boring month, or utterly brilliant?

It depends where you are, of course!

From festivals in Chile, to a dip in the Devil’s Pool in Zambia, or days spent spotting rare black-necked cranes in Bhutan, there are some exceptional places to head to in October.

CHILE

Chile in October is a vibrant mix of spring blossoms, temperate weather, and outdoor adventure. The southern hemisphere is emerging from winter, making it perfect for exploring Patagonia’s national parks or the Atacama Desert’s surreal landscapes.

Santiago bustles with life, and wine regions like Maipo Valley invite tastings of world-renowned vintages. Cultural festivals and local markets bring colour to urban centres, while coastal towns like Valparaíso shine with their bohemian vibe. October’s pleasant climate, fewer crowds, and blossoming nature make it an ideal time to experience Chile’s diverse beauty.

ARGENTINA

Argentina in October is a springtime wonder, offering a blend of mild temperatures and vibrant landscapes. Buenos Aires comes alive with jacaranda trees in full bloom, lining streets with purple blossoms. It’s an ideal time to explore the city’s European-inspired architecture, buzzing cafes, and cultural events.

In the north, Iguazú Falls roars with renewed energy, while Patagonia’s glaciers and mountains start to reveal themselves as the snow melts. Wine lovers can enjoy Mendoza’s vineyards, basking in the sunny weather. October in Argentina is perfect for both nature and city exploration.

SOUTH AFRICA

October is an exciting time to explore Zambia, especially for adventure seekers! This month marks the low water levels at Victoria Falls, allowing visitors to experience the exhilarating Devil’s Pool. Imagine swimming right at the edge of this iconic waterfall, surrounded by breathtaking views—it’s a bucket-list experience like no other!

Additionally, October falls at the tail end of the dry season, making it a prime time for wildlife enthusiasts. Animals flock to waterholes, offering incredible opportunities for game viewing in Zambia’s national parks. Picture yourself on a safari, witnessing elephants, lions, and leopards in their natural habitat.

The warm, sunny weather also enhances outdoor activities, from canoeing along the Zambezi River to immersing yourself in local culture. Whether you’re seeking thrills or tranquil moments in nature, Zambia in October promises unforgettable experiences that will leave you with lasting memories. Don’t miss out on this hidden gem in Africa!

ZAMBIA

This October 2025, discover the lesser-known gem of Namaqualand in South Africa, renowned for its breathtaking springtime blooms. As the landscape transforms into a vibrant tapestry of wildflowers, visitors can explore the stunning vistas and enjoy leisurely walks through fields of colour. Namaqualand offers a unique, off-the-beaten-path experience that captivates nature lovers and photographers alike.

While you’re in South Africa, take time to explore iconic attractions such as Table Mountain and the stunning Garden Route. Don’t miss a safari in Kruger National Park, where you can witness the Big Five in their natural habitat. BHUTAN

Many consider October one of the two best months of the year for Bhutan and for good reason. The weather is mild, the skies are clear, there are festivals to attend, dry mountain trails to hike, and a cosy nip in the air come evening.

In the Phobjika Valley, endangered black-necked cranes can arrive from Tibet by the end of this month so it’s worth the winding roads and extra days to spend time near Gangtey. With great weather, it’s an ideal time to focus on walks and treks, hiking to monasteries, temples, villages, and soaking up the views.

So grab your hiking boots, your walking stick, and your sense of adventure. Just be sure to book well in advance as accommodation is limited – especially around Gangtey – and October sees more visitors to Bhutan than any other month.

BORNEO

Known as the land below the wind, the Borneo state of Sabah is possible to visit year-round but there are a few sweet spots and October is one of them. The crowds of summer have dispersed, costs have dropped, and the heavier rains of late November haven’t rolled in yet.

Whether you want to walk the trails of Kinabalu Park or try for a sunrise at the summit, relax on the sandy shores of Gaya Island, or spend every day looking for wildlife in search of the perfect photo, this is a good month for it. Of course, we think a little of each makes for the best holiday.

One bit of warning: Sarawak’s weather can be risky starting in October so if Bako National Park is an absolute must for you, we suggest March through September.

MOROCCO

October is the best time to explore Morocco! The weather is pleasantly warm, making it ideal for outdoor adventures. In Marrakech, the vibrant souks come alive with activity, offering an array of handmade crafts and spices to discover. The city’s gardens, such as the Majorelle, showcase their autumn beauty with colourful blooms and serene pathways.

The Sahara Desert is particularly inviting this time of year, with comfortable temperatures perfect for camel trekking and unforgettable stargazing under clear skies. As you hike in the Atlas Mountains, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the changing landscape, adorned with rich autumn colours.

TIP – Book well in advance

CAMBODIA

Much of Asia is in monsoon in October, but it’s the firm start of dry season in magical Cambodia. The dust and humidity is gone leaving greenery behind in the countryside, the temperature is warm with plenty of sunshine – and even better, the waterfalls and seasonal lakes are flooded with water from the wet months.

Tonle Sap in particular is 5 times the size at the end of wet season and floating around the stilted houses is at its outstanding best in October. It might actually be our specialist’s very favorite time to go – the crowds around the Angkor Temples rise from now to a peak in December, so it’s a quieter time to explore – before heading to the jungle or the beach.  Bliss.

With pleasant temperatures between 25 and 30°C and fewer crowds than peak season, this month is perfect for discovering everything this amazing destination has to offer in perfect and comfortable weather. The intense summer heat has mellowed, making it just right for those craving some more sun.

Imagine cruising the Nile on a cozy dahabeya sailboat, soaking in the stunning views and enjoying the pleasant weather and Nile breeze on the sundeck.
