Travelling with children can be an adventure all on its own. Though if you pair it with a family-friendly safari in South Africa, it becomes an experience you’ll treasure for a lifetime. South Africa is filled with incredible wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and lodges designed to cater to the needs of families, from toddlers to teenagers. Whether your kids are seasoned adventurers or completely new to the wild, thereās a place for everyone.
Below are a few of my favourites when it comes to exploring South Africa with children:
Tucked away in the Waterberg region, Antās Nest is a perfect destination to explore South Africa with children. Even if theyāve never been on a horse before. The team at Ant’s Nest knows how to cater for children of all ages. They offer tailored experiences that introduce them to the magic of wildlife in a relaxed and fun setting. Younger children can start with pony rides or join in on shorter, slower horseback safaris. During the horseback safari a guide will walk the horse. Like this your children are safe at all time. The lodge is completely family-friendly, with options for everyone to enjoy the beauty of nature. Whether you want to ride through the bush or simply watch the animals from the lodgeās viewing deck.
But… Its not only horseback safari, they offer game drives, guided walks, guided mountain bike tour and much more fun activities. For example sundowners with the rhinos
What makes Antās Nest extra special is its focus on teaching children. Here they learn about the environment, fostering a deep connection with nature through activities like bushcraft lessons, fishing, and interactive wildlife experiences. Plus, itās set in a malaria-free zone, offering added peace of mind for parents.
If you’re looking for an authentic bush experience that accommodates younger children, Umlani Bush Camp in Timbavati is a fantastic option. With no age restrictions, it’s perfect for families with little ones. While younger children might not be able to join the more intense activities, such as guided bush walks (often restricted to kids over 14). They can still embark on thrilling game drives where they’ll get up close to Africa’s iconic wildlife.
Umlani offers a laid-back, eco-friendly experience where families can enjoy the magic of the bush in a truly immersive way. The rustic treehouse adds an extra touch of adventure for kids, and the camp’s welcoming atmosphere makes it easy for children to fall in love with the wilderness.
Nottenās Bush Camp is another fantastic option for families, but it does have a minimum age limit of 6 years old. While younger children wonāt be able to take part in the guided bush walks, there’s plenty to enjoy with the game drives. Set in the Sabi Sands, Nottenās offers an intimate experience with only a few guests, making it feel like your very own slice of African paradise.
This camp focuses on offering personalised, memorable experiences. With its emphasis on family-friendly hospitality, itās perfect for introducing older children to the wonders of wildlife, while the peaceful setting allows for quality family bonding time.
Travelling with multiple generations? Look no further than the exclusive-use safari houses at Morukuru in Madikwe Game Reserve. Morukuru is renowned for its flexibility and ability to cater to families of all ages. They offer a unique experience where you set the pace. Whether you have babies, toddlers, or teens, everyone is welcome. You can create a fully customised itinerary that suits your familyās needs and interests. Whether itās going on game drives, bush walks, or simply relaxing by the pool.
Morukuru’s three private houses ā Ownerās House, River House, and Farm House ā are all located in the malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve. Each house comes with a private chef, guide, and vehicle. Making it ideal for those who want to experience the bush at their own pace. Itās the perfect spot for families looking for luxury, privacy, and adventure all in one place.
For families looking for more variety, the Kwandwe Game Reserve offers several family-friendly accommodations in a malaria-free area. Including Ecca Lodge, Fort House, Melton Manor, and Uplands Homestead. Each of these lodges has its own style, but they all offer the same incredible family-friendly experience. Kwandweās staff is particularly experienced at organising activities for children. They offer specialised game drives, nature walks, and even treasure hunts to keep young ones engaged.
Ecca Lodge, in particular, is an excellent choice for families. Offering spacious suites that offer plenty of room for kids to play. Whether it’s spotting the Big Five or learning about conservation, your children will be kept entertained and educated in the best way possible. A great place to explore South Africa with children!
Cape Town is a fantastic family destination, and thereās plenty to enjoy! Start with a cable car ride up Table Mountain for panoramic views, or head to Lionās Head for a more active adventure. The V&A Waterfront offers boat rides, a giant Cape Wheel, and fun shopping.
For nature lovers, Kirstenbosch Gardens is a great spot for picnicking and exploring the treetop canopy walk. Nearby, Boulders Beach in Simonās Town is a must-see, where children can swim with adorable African penguins in their natural habitat.
During whale season (June to November) a few nights at Hermanus is something you shouldn’t miss. Book a boat trip to get close to these gentile giants. Hermanus is the best place for land based whale watching as well and the only place that has a whale caller. Hence, take a stroll along the boulevard and maybe you are lucky and see some breaching.
Expand the trip by venturing along the Garden Route, where family fun continues. In Oudtshoorn, a visit to an ostrich farm is a highlight, offering kids the chance to learn about these giant birds and even feed them! The Cango Caves nearby are also a fascinating underground adventure, perfect for curious kids.
The Garden Route also offers places like Knysna, with its stunning lagoon and forest walks, or Plettenberg Bay, known for dolphin and whale watching. Itās a brilliant combination of wildlife, nature, and unique experiences, creating lasting memories for the whole family.
KwaZulu-Natal is a fantastic destination for a family adventure, especially with Umkhumbi Lodge‘s exciting 10-day children’s program (email me for more information). The lodge offers a blend of fun and education, making it perfect for kids. The program includes activities like animal tracking, learning about local wildlife, and discovering the bush on guided nature walks.
Children can also enjoy interactive experiences such as reptile encounters and exploring the ecosystem of the surrounding game reserves. In addition, cultural visits introduce them to the fascinating traditions of the Zulu people, creating a well-rounded and enriching experience.
Beyond the lodge, the region offers amazing family activities, including a visit to iSimangaliso Wetland Park for boat cruises and wildlife spotting or a safari at Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve, known for its rhinos. A stop at the stunning Drakensberg Mountains for hiking or horse riding is also a great way to round off the trip. It’s the ultimate family adventure!
South Africa offers an incredible variety of family-friendly safaris, many of which are located in malaria-free zones. For parents, this is a key factor when choosing a safari destination. The countryās diversity of landscapes and wildlife, coupled with the high standard of family-friendly lodges, ensures that thereās something for everyone.
Whether your children are keen on riding horses through the bush at Antās Nest. Love tracking animals on game drives at Nottenās or Umlani. Or want to explore the wilderness with grandparents at Morukuru, there are options to suit all ages and travel styles.
So, pack your bags, bring the kids, contact me and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime. South Africa is calling, and it promises memories that will stay with your family forever.
