My Favourite Memories in South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, and Zambia

Travel is often about the experiences that leave a lasting impression, the moments that stay with you long after you’ve returned home. For me, Africa is a treasure chest of such memories. Each country offers something unique, and I’ve been fortunate to witness some extraordinary moments in South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, and Zambia. Let me share a few of my favourite memories in Africa.

South Africa: A Bush Wedding Like No Other

South Africa will always hold a special place in my heart, especially because of my wedding at Notten’s Bush Camp in Sabi Sand. The setting was nothing short of magical, with the ceremony taking place under the shade of an ancient marula tree. We exchanged vows on a cowhide, surrounded by the raw beauty of the African bush. What made the experience even more unique was the local village choir singing as I walked down the “bush aisle.” It felt like a moment out of a dream, and the peaceful energy of the bush made it perfect. Sabi Sand is famous for its exceptional wildlife, and although our focus was on love, I couldn’t help but feel that the wildlife around us shared in the magic of the moment. During the afternoon game drive we wanted to make pictures with the golden light, though this never happened. A pride of lions and a beautiful leopard crossed our way and captivated us until the lights went down. Surely one of my favourite memories in Africa!

Kenya: An Intimate Encounter with the Great Migration

Kenya’s Masai Mara is one of the most iconic safari destinations, especially during the Great Migration. My favourite memory in Kenya is that I had the privilege of witnessing the dramatic river crossing at a time when the crowds were minimal due to COVID, and only 12 vehicles were present making it feel incredibly intimate. Watching hundreds of wildebeest hesitating at the edge of the Mara River, then courageously leaping in, was a sight to behold. The air was electric with anticipation, and while we were fortunate enough to avoid any crocodile encounters in this stretch of the river, the experience was still exhilarating. The sheer scale of the migration and the spectacle of nature’s power left me in awe. If you’re lucky enough to visit during this time, witnessing this migration should be at the top of your list.

Botswana: A Leopard and Crocodile Showdown

Botswana’s wilderness has provided me with some of the most jaw-dropping wildlife encounters, and one stands out as a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. While in the Okavango Delta, I witnessed an unbelievable battle between a leopard and a crocodile over an impala kill. The leopard had dragged its catch under a tree, but the croc soon arrived, drawn by the scent of the carcass. What followed was an epic battle of strength, with both animals pulling, pushing, and tugging over the impala. Exhausted, they both eventually gave up, leaving the carcass behind. It was raw, powerful, and completely unpredictable—something you might expect to see in a National Geographic special. These kinds of unforgettable moments are why Botswana remains one of the most thrilling safari destinations in Africa.

Zambia: The Thrill of Devil’s Pool

For thrill-seekers, Zambia offers one of the most heart-pumping experiences: swimming in Devil’s Pool at Victoria Falls. I’ll never forget the sensation of standing right on the edge of one of the world’s most powerful waterfalls. The view was absolutely breathtaking, and the adrenaline coursing through me was unmatched. To swim in such a place—where the water thunders down just a few meters away—was an experience like no other. The pool itself is naturally formed by rocks, creating a safe spot right at the edge, but I can’t deny that my heart was racing! This heart-stopping adventure combined with the awe-inspiring beauty of the falls made for a truly unforgettable experience. Zambia’s Victoria Falls is a must-see destination for anyone seeking a thrill!

I finished this trip with a stunning Rovos Rail train journey back to Pretoria, an elegant and relaxing way to reflect on the adventures I had just experienced.
