Getting Around Belize

Belize isn’t a very large country, just 280 km North to south and only 109 km at it’s widest, East – West. There is some complexity is reaching some destinations considering the many small islands and remote jungle areas. However, there are plenty of options available.

By road

The roads are pretty decent, with good highways from north to south and east to west. The routes into more remote areas can be bumpy and can certainly get rain-affected but generally speaking access via road is possible, not too time consuming and you will enjoy the vibrancy of Belize as you pass by.

If you choose to travel by road, we can arrange transfers for you with safe, English-speaking and friendly drivers. This can range form the more expensive private transfer to a less expensive shuttle service with other tourists. Both options are comfortable vehicles with AC.

Another option is to rent a car and self-drive through Belize. This is a great option if you would like the option to stop off at various sites along the way and are more open to spontaneous adventure. The roads are good and drivers in Belize are generally safe, although you should be alert to erratic and unexpected over-taking! You drive on the right in Belize and so should be comfortable driving from the opposite side of the car. We have a great recommendation for auto-rental with great prices and a great fleet of vehicles. Car rental is more expensive than renting a car elsewhere in the world so talk to us about what makes most sense for your budget.

Your final road option is the local buses. They run frequently and nearly on-time. They are a fun and exhilarating way to see Belize, both the landscape and the people. There are two bus options; the cheaper and more common buses are old American school buses and if the seats fill up, you can expect to stand. The other option which serves a few routes is slightly more expensive but you will be on an AC coach with a guaranteed seat.

By Boat

Many of the destinations in Belize are only accessible by boat which is a wonderful way to see the coastal areas. Depending on where you are going, the boat transfer could be private to the hotel, or there are public services that run between the mainland and the larger islands; Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. We can arrange your water transfers for you and will recommend the best option depending on your desired itinerary.

By Air

It is fairly cheap to fly around Belize and the flight times are short. Maya Island Air offer flights on most routes at reasonable prices.
