Exploring Arabian Holidays

Land of Frankincense

Your Itinerary

Day 1 - Salalah City Tour

Today take a tour of Salalah, the birthplace of Sultan Qaboos. First stop will be at the archaeological park of Al Baleed, a UNESCO Heritage Site. On your way to Haffa souk, where the fragrances of the orient come together, pass by the royal palace. Visit the gold souk with its variety of oriental gold and silver handicrafts. End of the tour is a scenic drive through the gardens of fruit plantations. Stop at a fruit stall for a refreshing coconut milk or try the small sweet local bananas, papayas and guavas.

Day 2 - West Salalah

Today take the zigzag road up to the Dhofar mountains, visiting the biblical Prophet Job’s tomb and the small mosque next to it. Stop in Wadi Afur valley with its frankincense trees. Further south reach Dalkout village, where rare baobab trees grow. At Fazaia Beach you can picnic and swim. On the way back visit the magnificent sandy beach, the cliffs and the blowholes at Mughsayl. En-route stop at the Marnif cave and visit the nearby Khawar, a lagoon with flamingos, pelicans and storks. Later follow the mountain trail up, enjoying breathtaking views.

Day 3 - East Salalah

Today take a trip along a scenic road lined with palm trees to Taqa castle. Before proceeding to Sumhuram, stop on top of the hill with a stunning view over the village and the ocean.  On the cliff of Khawr Rawri you will find the ruins of the fortress and the palace of Sumhuram, presumably the remains of the Queen Sheba Palace. Continue your trip to Mirbat. On the way visit Bin Ali’s tomb with its white double domes and the natural springs of Ayn Razat.

Day 4 - Desert Adventure

Drive northwards to reach the sand dunes of the Empty Quarter (Rub al Khali), which is the biggest sand desert on earth. The highlight of today’s tour is the visit of the lost city of Ubar. On the way back you may stop at a black camel farm and pass by frankincense tree plantations, where the resin is harvested by hand.

Day 5 - Relax on the Beach

Spend this day at leisure, enjoying walks along the beautiful beach, snorkeling or laying on the beach soaking up the sun.
