Built by French architect Walter Lang as a 50th Birthday tribute to his beloved wife, the villa was fashioned on a traditional 'wallawa' or Sri Lankan Manor House. Therefore while the grounds and views from the villa are overwhelming, the main body of the house is in fact wonderfully modest which creates a relaxed homely feel. The double height ceiling in the main living area and hand carved wood work can't fail to impress, but the comfortable seating area, numerous book cases and decor make the property feel extremely warm and inviting.

Double doors lead out from the living room onto a fantastic terrace which commands 180 degree elevated ocean views. There is seating and dining space on the terrace. Pristine white steps then lead down from the main house and vantage point to a terraced garden. On the lower terrace is a long infinity pool and sun patio which is the perfect place to spend long relaxing days. Alternatively a set of steeper steps sweep down the cliff to another manicured lawn, private sala and gated access to the beach. Although the beach is not privately owned it is only used by the local fishermen and their families and so guests will pretty much have it to themselves.

The villa officially has 4 bedrooms, consisting of 3 doubles and 1 twin which lead of from the four corners of the living area. All are air-conditioned and have en-suite bathrooms. Old painted Indian temple doors, antique bookcases, woven coconut lining and dreamy four poster beds create an aura of romance and tranquillity.

The house also has a secret fifth bedroom which can be utilised by guests at an additional cost. Originally intended as Lang's study but never completed, the current owners only found the vaulted room by accident. Almost cave like in feel, this wonderfully quirky room is a very good size and runs under the outdoor terrace. Stylish and also a bit of fun, this room would appeal to a romancing couple or older children.

Back inside the main living room there is another hidden gem. A secret door just past the main door, leads to a ship's staircase that was added to create access to a snug tucked away in one of the rooms large ceiling arches. Its balcony overlooks the sitting room and houses a modern home theatre complete with projector and screen.

Pointe Sud comes fully staffed including a private cook. While we were there they prepared one of the most memorable curries I have very had in Sri Lanka, both for the taste and also the exquisite surrounds in which it was eaten.
