'Fortaleza was in an ideal location and is a lovely boutique hotel. The room was a little on the small side, but it was their standard and perfectly adequate for a 2 night stay. The breakfast and lunch we had there were very good. We loved Galle Fort and even had time to visit the beach at Unawatuna. We ate at the Deco Hotel on the same street one evening and it was excellent.' DP - March 2015

Fortaleza has three unquiely decorated bedrooms, with en suites bathrooms and air conditioning. All have canopied mosquito nets over comfortable four-poster beds, luxurious white cotton linen, wonderful hand made furniture and are decked with bright tropical flowers. They can be rented individually or together by a family or group of friends.

Upstairs, the Master Bedroom exudes colonial grandeur with a 15ft ceiling and lazy day bed. Across the landing, the Library Room is flooded with light from a huge circular window on one side and original bay window complete with window seat. Downstairs, the smaller Turquoise Room is also wonderfully light and airy and its big windows look onto the Lighthouse Street veranda.

Life a Fortaleza revolves around its pretty restaurant / living area and its sunny courtyard which is dotted with tropical plants. The restaurant food is very good and popular with weekenders from Colombo. The menu comprises of both traditional and contemporary choices with a Singaporean twist as head chef Arun worked in one of Singapore's best restaurants before moving to Fortaleza.

The hotel makes an ideal base from which to explore the beautiful town of Galle and its impressive fort. You can admire the distinctive colonial Dutch architecture, browse its many small shops, sample the bars and cafes, and watch the sun go down over the Indian Ocean. Just twenty minutes from Galle and you can be surfing or whale watching, and with the opening of the new motorway you can spend the day in Colombo before returning to Galle to watch the sun go down with a cocktail.
