The Rupar Mandalay is a fantastic option for those seeking a boutique hotel in Mandalay but still want the facilities and service of a larger hotel. Set in beautifully landscaped gardens, the resort offers an irresistible blend of contemporary comforts and traditional Burmese culture.

As well as a well-maintained, large swimming pool, the resort has two saunas, a spa and a well equipped gym. We especially love that guests are treated to a complimentary 15 minute Thai massage during their stay as well as a complimentary cocktail with nibbles each evening during happy hour. During the high season there is a nightly puppet and traditional dance show.

There are a total of 44 rooms; half of these are older, and the other half are in the new wing by the swimming pool. The older rooms (which include the deluxe rooms, junior suite and family suite) are decorated with Burmese carvings, rattan furniture, teakwood-panelling and silk textiles, and have a wonderfully traditional feeling. The deluxe rooms are a little dark because of all the wooden walls, while the family suite is ideal for those in bigger groups as it has three bedrooms (two doubles and a twin) as well as ample living space.

Our favourite rooms are in the new block by the pool, these rooms are light, spacious and airy, whilst retaining plenty of Burmese features. The Premium Corner Suites in the new block are especially light with large windows on two different walls with a sweeping balcony and pool views. The Premium Suites have one window but are still delightfully light, with a balcony and high ceiling - and a fantastic room choice.

The resort has a smart restaurant and there is plenty of seating outside - although al fresco dining is only available during the high season. It offers a mix of Burmese, western and Chinese dishes.

The hotel is located on the eastern edge of the city and is about a five minute drive to the centre.
