Ideal for those who do not want to take another flight to get to the beach, The Bay of Bengal Resort is about a five-hour driver from Yangon - and is one of the most luxurious options on this beach, which is popular with expats and locals.

The Resort sits on a spacious 14.3 acres of land and blends modern design with traditional and graceful Myanmar style, set in pretty, lush gardens. Its location is secluded at the right-hand end of Ngwe Saung Beach, and has own private 1800 feet long beach front.

All rooms have rich natural light flowing in, and are nicely decorated with high ceilings and classic finishing touches - and all have a balcony or veranda. The entry-level Deluxe Rooms downstairs have a garden view and those upstairs offer splendid sea views from the balcony. The Bengal Suites are larger and are situated in the second row of the resort with direct sea views. The suites are one room with an attached bathroom and a superb sun lounge or veranda.

At the front row, leading right out onto the beach are the Royal Bengal Villas. These single-storey two-room villas have a bedroom and an extra room for a day bed. The spacious veranda is a perfect place to sun bake or to just laze away and soak up the tropical atmosphere. The smart and spacious bathrooms are decorated with gold and silver slate and grey marble. The glass roof above the bathtub allows natural light into the room.

The resort has a large al fresco restaurant which serves a mix of international and local food. The hotel has bikes available for hire and despite it’s remote location, you can be on the main road behind the beach where there are lots of other eating options in about 10 minutes on a bike.

There is a spa with gym on site - although when we visited the gym was under construction.
