"Good city hotel without any frills. Lovely restaurant on the top floor with complimentary cocktails." - Fiona McF, Feb 2019

Guests arriving at the Bagan King will be in no doubt that they are in the heart of Mayanmar. Not only is the boutique hotel within a stone's throw of the moated walls of Mayanmar's last kingdom, but the interior is tastefully adorned with gold and bronze-motifs and staff greet travellers in traditional costume. Rooms and communal areas are decorated with handcrafted furnishings by local Mandalay craftsman thanks to the hotel's commitment to immersing its guests in regional culture.

The lobby is a feast for the eyes, we especially loved the gold leaves hanging from the chandeliers and the terracotta bricks set against ornate carved wooden doors with gold details. In fact we had the most unique welcome drink here - slushed honey dew served in a gold goblet!

The hotel has Deluxe and Superior King rooms, all decorated in rich ambers, auburns and browns, evoking Mandalay's heritage. Bathrooms feature stripped-back brickwork and opulent golden basins. While the design aims to reflect traditional culture, modern comforts are also included. Guests can enjoy a minibar in each room and individual air conditioning.

The rooms are smart but it is fair to say do not match the opulence of the lobby or restaurant in any way. The Superior Rooms all have double beds and the Deluxe are all fitted with twins, we preferred the size and layout of the Deluxe Rooms but it is not possible to have a double bed in these rooms. It is also worth noting the bathroom is a wet room (no cubicle to separate the shower), which is very common in Myanmar.

The restaurant offers fantastic sunset views over dinner (and has a wonderfully painted ornate ceiling - the Sistine Chapel of Myanmar!) As you would expect given the hotels ethos of authenticity, the menu features Myanmar cuisine with local Mandalay flavours added. However, they also cater to international tastes with dishes from around the world also available; the free breakfast buffet even includes bacon and eggs. After a day of sight-seeing, guests can take in spectacular views across to the blue mountains while enjoying a nightcap or two

The entire hotel is a smoke-free zone with free wifi throughout. Family-friendly services include baby-sitting and laundry services.

Outside the hotel's doors, Mandalay's Royal Palace is just a five-minute walk away. Yadanarpon Diamond Plaza, Zegyo Market and Man Myanmar Plaza are also within easy reach, along with lively street markets, teashops as well as modern shopping centres.
