The Amara Mountain Resort has a decidedly European feel, having been first built by the British in 1909. A second matching mock-Tudor style building was added in the early 2000s, but both yellow-painted buildings offer a comfortable stay among the scenic mountain ranges and lush green garden.

East meets West in the tasteful decor of the spacious and bright rooms, which have pale walls and rich wooden flooring. Some rooms include a large bathtub while the rest are fitted with a shower - and all have English style fireplaces with lovely big windows. Many of the bathrooms do not have shower curtains, making them wet rooms, which is very common in Myanmar.

The restaurant serves a wide range of tasty local food, as well as Indian and European cuisine. Guests can unwind after a day of sightseeing at local caves, mountain biking or trekking with a drink at the bar. A nine-hole golf course is also close by.

An on-site spa is ideal for indulging in some pampering and guests can feel rejuvenated after a relaxing massage. There's also a sauna to allow you to unwind.

Amara Mountain Resort is not in the centre of Kalaw - it is about a 30 minute walk away or a 5-minute drive. The hotel's car service can be arranged for about £3 each way. It is a 10-minute ride from Bamboo Pagoda and 40km from Heho Airport. It is also within easy reach of Myin Ma Hti Cave and Palaung Village. Parking spaces are available at the resort and car hire and bicycle rental are offered.
