Cultural experience

Southeast of Kuching toward the border with Indonesia is Kampong Mongkos. This Bidayuh village offers a unique glimpse into the life of this tribe and their distinctive history.

During a visit, you'll learn about the "confrontation," the undeclared war between Malaysia and Indonesia during the first part of the 1960s. Visit with the residents and see some of the longhouses. If you'd like, help prepare lunch in bamboo shafts cooked over a fire. Your visit will include multiple opportunities to walk around, talk with people, and get a sense of what life is like for these rice and rubber farmers.

Guests are accommodated in family houses dotted around the longhouse. Rooms have single beds and a fan. Toilets and showers are shared with the family. Please note that accommodation is quite simple but food servings are generous and the hospitality is warm.
