Nestled in the lush green jungle outside Luang Prabang, this gorgeous hotel is a designer's dream with countless subtle nods to the area's heritage.

Set about 10 minutes' drive from the historic part of Luang Prabang on the site of a 19th century hill station, the Rosewood offers a haven in nature. It's an idyllic - and ideal - respite after exploring the city and surrounds. The thickly forested property is home to a river and waterfall and all the rooms have a private terrace to bask in the beauty of Laos. Which, after all, is what Laos is all about.

Designer Bill Bensley gave this elegant hotel a somewhat more subtle touch than some of his other properties yet you'll find his signature style and a strong testament to the history of Laos in every corner. We love the references to elephants crossing the river, the light fixtures, fabrics, colours, and elegant yet approachable design of every space, public and private. Each guest room pays testament to one of the hill station's esteemed past visitors while the tents pay homage to the different tribes of Laos.

Our favourite rooms are the Hilltop Tents with jaw-dropping mountain views and ultimate privacy. The stairs to reach these are not for the faint of heart and without railings along some of the paths, children under 12 are not permitted. We think these are the ultimate spot for a luxurious stay in Luang Prabang.

Closer to the main amenities of the hotel, although still requiring a walk and some stairs (are you noticing a theme? this hotel really is built on a hill station) are the Villas, Suites, and Rooms. Waterfall Pool Villas offer ample space to relax indoors and out with sumptuous river views a private pool, and a separate outdoor bathtub. The incredibly spacious Riverside Villas sit directly on the river so that you can start your morning on the balcony with the sights and sounds of nature.

Riverside Rooms and Suites are closest to the Great House and offer the best options for families and those who want connecting rooms. At twice the size of the Riverside Rooms, the Suites all have one king bed and space to add two beds. The Rooms are comfortably large for one extra bed.

Dining is available at The Great House with a menu that emphasizes locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, including some grown on-site. The Elephant Bridge Bar is open from 4pm and sits above the river offering cocktails, traditional Laotian bar snacks, and a full drink menu.

The Rosewood provides complimentary shuttle service into town along with a mobile phone able so you can call to arrange a ride back when you're ready.

Please note that there are no televisions and all rooms require a bit of walking and at least a few stairs to access.
