This former rice warehouse on the banks of the Nam Khan river has been beautifully transformed into a cool little hotel and restaurant, just one block down from Luang Prabang's main street. It’s colourful, smart interiors, wonderful location and reasonable prices make it one of the best value options in town (in the high season it sells out very quickly).

The hotel is divided into two buildings, both over-looking the river, with the standard rooms in one building (2 doors down) and the superior rooms in the main building. The upper floor rooms in both buildings are our favourites as they have balconies offering stunning views across the Nam Khan River - whereas the rooms on the ground floor are less private. The superior rooms are a little bigger than the standard rooms, have deep baths (not just showers) and come with a daybed. But that’s about it.

First-floor rooms open onto a small balcony, which is, in effect, communal, but strategically-place potted palms add privacy. Ground-floor rooms open onto a terraced sitting area that does very much the same thing.

Décor is similar throughout: all rooms come with off-white walls, shuttered windows and big comfy (often 4-poster) beds with splashes of colour coming from cushions, bed throws and drapes. First-floor rooms have varnished floorboards; ground-floor rooms come with coloured cement floors. Expect crisp white linen, local art and silky voile curtains. Lovely bathrooms have enormous walk-in deluge showers. Superior rooms also have a bath; in first-floor rooms, it stands behind a screen in the bedroom.

The popular restaurant offers an excellent range of dishes, from traditional Lao favourites such as laab and spicy papaya salad through to comforting western favourites including steak and fries, with profiteroles for desert! The rooms are well-sized and finished in a traditional Lao style. The restaurant consistently gets great reviews and is popular with expats and travellers staying elsewhere.
