Live like royalty in a former prince’s family home - this stunning property, tucked away on the edge of Luang Prabang, is fit for a king and boasts two swimming pools.

Satri House is one of the most exquisite places in this ancient city, designed with a style inspired by Lao culture and set in a truly relaxing environment. Built as a residence for a branch of the Lao royal family in the late 1900s, Satri House was once the childhood home of Prince Souphanouvong. The original house is the centrepiece of masterful design, somehow managing to be intimate and homely yet striking and grand all at once. This is a glorious tribute to a bygone era.

The 31 attractive rooms are decorated in classy greys, creams and duck egg blue with polished wooden floors, beautiful silk cushions, handwoven rugs and carefully chosen antiques. Four-poster kingsize beds are the main focus of each room, draped with fine cotton sheets and billowing white curtains. Bathrooms are tastefully tiled, with fragrant toiletries and soft robes.

Deluxe Rooms are the entry-level room option, set in the garden buildings and still very spacious with balconies or terraces with garden views. Junior Suites are a little larger and all have baths and a separate powerful shower (whereas deluxe rooms just have showers).

The 3 Satri House Suites are some of the best rooms in the ancient town, partly because they are so spacious, but mostly because they are situated in the original Unesco-listed house (Deluxe Rooms and Junior Suites are in separate buildings which are newer additions).

In a stroke of inspired indulgence, there are two pools to recline beside. The main pool sits in the shade of the original royal house. The new pool is below, near the spa complex (which boasts high-ceilinged treatment rooms). The tucked-away resort also has a fabulous restaurant and bar on site but most people choose to dine in town.
