Undoubtedly the most luxurious hotel in the country; old-world charm meets modern-day convenience in the blissful surrounds of Amantaka, a former colonial hospital with shady verandas and a large pool.

Stepping into the inner courtyard of Amantaka almost feels like entering an exclusive spiritual centre which is instantly calming. A clever conversion of Luang Prabang’s old provincial hospital, today the hotel resembles more of a monastery than a hospital with its high ceilings, wide arched doors and minimalist colours and style. Fitting for a town which has more monks than elsewhere in Laos.

A sweeping driveway brings guests to a colonial-style lobby (the former X-ray room) beneath a low-slung red-tiled roof. Behind the dusky green shutters of the hotel lie twenty-four cream suites that surround a shady centre piece garden and expansive pool. High ceilings and four-posters hark back to the grand old days of travel, while Bose sound systems and a state-of-the-art spa herald the here and now.

Decor is without fuss: simple Southeast Asian wood furnishings, an embroidered silk throw, black-and-white photographs of Buddhist monks in meditation. What Aman resorts always does best is the anything-is-possible service, and that is no exception here.

The entry-level suites are spacious and open onto large terraces shaded by mango trees, offering tranquil outdoor areas with sun loungers and large umbrellas, while the next level up offer exactly the same rooms but with private pools in the gardens. The Mekong Pool Suites are larger and the Khan Pool Suite is even more spacious - with the largest of all being the Amantaka Pool Suite boasting a wraparound verandah with library, study, garden and private swimming pool. The Khan Suite is often for small groups of friends or families as they have the option of inter-connecting balcony doors.

The Amantaka Spa is a destination in itself; boasting steam and sauna rooms and a double Jacuzzi. Meanwhile you can sample some sensual Lao flavours at the airy pool terrace restaurant and enjoy a cocktail at the bar, which combines black-and-white photos of Buddhist monks with elegant teak sofas, rattan armchairs and trad newspaper racks.

Conveniently located within walking distance of the night market and other highlights, the resort offers a charming tuktuk service when the heat of the day or the hours of walking have been enough and you'd rather ride in comfort.
