Beautifully located on the seafront, Villa Romonea is unique in almost every way. It is hard to believe that as recently as 2007 it was a shell of a building, falling into dilapidation after its owners were killed by the Khmer Rouge and it became a military base for the Government.

By comparison, today you will find a wonderfully curvaceous and sweeping staircase through the middle of the white, airy house, with two spacious upstairs bedrooms that are without a doubt, the best in the house.

Built in 1968-69, it was designed to resemble a dragon (although to an untrained eye it does not look particularly dragon-like!) The master bedroom (room 4) is located in the 'dragon's head' and has wonderful views out to the ocean. The decor is not lavish, think white walls, understated furniture and feng shui and you are on the right lines. On the other side of the fabulous staircase you will find Room 3, which is the largest in the house and ideal for families as it could fit up to two extra beds. Downstairs the rooms are smaller and less impressive, but there are two connecting rooms (5 and 6) that are again ideal for families.

The swimming pool is large and surrounded by a spacious garden and decking, especially when you consider you will only ever be sharing it with up to five other rooms. For a large group it would be absolutely perfect to hire the villa in its entirety.

A stay at Villa Romonea feels more like a very posh homestay than a typical hotel. Guests can use the big kitchen as if it is their own and the hotel's lovely manager Stephane is extremely hands on and helpful - he is passionate about the villa and a fountain of knowledge when it comes to both the attractions and history of the area. Sitting down for a drink with Stephane is part of the villa?s charm.

The villa does not have a restaurant as such but you are spoilt for choice when it comes to food. Stephane works with eight local restaurants that serve the very best of Kep?s seafood among other dishes and he will present you with all eight menus to choose from. The food is then delivered to the resort in a speedy and fresh manner and you can eat it beside the pool, in the kitchen, the hall area or even in your room (although there are not dining tables in the rooms). Guests can also help themselves to the villa's communal kitchen and cook up their own feasts.

It is worth noting that despite Kep being on the coast it does not have a beach as such - in saying that Villa Romonea (and nearby Knai Bang Chatt) have the best ocean-side spots in the area.
